Title: I need your help to complete this forum
Post by: Janzl on August 31, 2007, 01:31:43 PM
Hi All,

I'm very happy that more and more of the old videopac.org members are pooring in  :).
Now I need your help. As you can see I have already put up some boards like Anything Videopac, Games, Swap & Sell etc etc. I want to ask you all to put in idea's for other boards. Or maybe new categories ( the ones we have now are Hello everybody, Videopac, Collecting etc...)

And of course, every Idea is welcome  :)

Janzl

To help people find this place easier through Google, or whatever, change the index code for ths forum.

Currently you have in the index.php file:

   <meta name="description" content="Welcome to the Videopac forum... - Index" />
<meta name="keywords" content="PHP, MySQL, bulletin, board, free, open, source, smf, simple, machines, forum" />

I'm not sure where exactly this index.php file is on this forum software, but you could put in:

   <meta name="description" content="Welcome to the Videopac forum... - Index" />
<meta name="keywords" content="PHP, MySQL, bulletin, board, free, open, source, smf, simple, machines, forum, odyssey2, G7000, G7200, G7400, philips, video games, Videopac, Odyssey" />

Main thing is, you need keywords in there that match what is on the forum. This will help Google index it better, and quicker! It has worked for me - I have never submitted my pages to any search engine - they always find me (and usually quickly too).

Just a thought... (be careful when/if you make this change) - ie., backup the files!  ;)

One other thing. Do you want this forum to be strictly Videopac!? As it stands, that is what it looks like! Just my opinion. I have no issue with the forum name, but you may want to include the Odyssey (brazil) and Odyssey2 (USA/Canada) in some of the wording in various areas of the Forums.

Such as changing 'Talk about anything concerning Videopac', to 'Talk about anything concerning Videopac/Odyssey2'.

just my two bits...

Hi Ozyr,

You are absolutely right. The keywords have been added and I'm gonna change some boardnames right away.

Thanks  ;D

Yup, I saw that you just added the keyboards. It seems silly, but they really help with search engines - especially Google! Just something I learned during my HTML years. Give it about a week, and this forum should show up on the first page if you search for 'videopac forum'. I'd be surprised if it doesn't!
 ;D

Thanks for the tip Ozyr.

The funny thing is that alreay some time ago I read that the search engines where going to ignore the keywords because so many websites where taking disadvantage of them. But apparantly this isn't so.

Anyway, keep the tips coming  ;D

I think you just answered it. Grg (George) h (H).  Okay, now I know...

So what is George doing with videopac.com!? It was probably announced on the old forum, but I don't remember it.

but the videopac.com site doesn't seem to work  :'(

Is it supposed too!?

haha, yeah its me  :D I bought it some time ago but haven't got round to setting it up. GRGH are my initials, and my first name is of course George.

Anyway I started trying to set something up some time ago, which is under www.georgeh.com/videopac but I decided I didn't want to do it like that so at some point I'll start again.

Thanks for the link  ;D

I know it so easy to start a website but its another thing to finish it. ( In a way it will never be finished ) But don't give up, you'll get there  :). Believe me I know haha

Just a note about pointing out the new forum, I finally updated my list on ozyr.com - also put up a paragraph on the update.  Can't hurt!  ;)

I wonder if it was that Meta stuff I told you about!

I just Googled 'Videopac Forum,' and this site was #2 on the list. My link to here is #6!

I told you within a week! Now people should find this place easier if they search for it!  8)

P.S. Just did a Odyssey2 Forum search. This forum lists #1, with my link as #2!  ;D

Hey Ozyr,

Thanx for the good news, and for the MetaTips of course  ;D

Well, hopefully we can get the old bunch back together.

I'm sure you have something, I linked almost straight away and I only come in at 14 and 16 in googles search results.

Well, it could be the Meta thing. I don't know 100% if that is the main way Google works. All I know is that when I put them in, and don't promote anything on Google, I still make it to the first page of a search - normally.

Go figure...

Just glad to see the new vp/o2 Forum on that first page. SHould help in getting the roughly 100 members that we had back. It will take time though.

I think they must use a combination of things. I'm sure I heard that they use the number of pages that link to you, that's why I put a link out there from my site.

well thanks to the advert that you put on ebay you got 20% of the members back so that's not so bad!

I'm sure most will come back, but it will take time. About half the users on the old board did not come here on a regular basis.

To be honest with you, half the users that were on the old board only ever posted once or twice anyway and some only joined to try and flog things to us or get our opinions as to how much something was worth on ebay. So 20+ members is very good and to be honest we probably have the best members here anyway nut all new members are welcome!

Short note:

Good to see that 'Show unread post since last visit' works. Last time I really checked this forum (a million years ago) it wasn't working for me  :-[

that's actually the only way I read posts - this is the greatest feature on any board ever !!
