Title: Calling all homebrewers: Ody wants a Flappy Bird too!
Post by: Janzl on February 12, 2014, 01:34:49 PM
As some of you might have seen, the incredibly hyped game Flappy Bird has been ported to the Atari 2600 (http://www.retrocollect.com/News/fabled-flappy-bird-unofficially-soars-onto-atari-2600.html).

It doesn't really look that convincing and I am sure the O2/Vpac can do much better then that.

So my dear Homebrewers... I CHALLENGE YOU!!! ;)

If it could be done, it would be another game that only uses the action button (no joystick control).  ;)

There is also a vectrex version.

Sorry, but every other Flappy Bird conversion is pointless now that the ultimate one has been created:

Flappy Bird is are really simple game in where you are a bird that has to avoid tubes while flying sideways. You have to make the bird "Flap" by touching the screen (or press fire on some of the remakes) to keep it flying.

It's a really hard game that has become so much of a worldwide sensation that the developer decided to remove it from the appstores because he wanted to have his personal life back. :)

More and more ports of the game for different systems are popping up including the A2600 and the Vectrex.
I am sure it must be realtively easy to make for the Videopac.

I haven't played the game yet, but it's basically the same game as Cavity from Revival Studios isn't it?

Here are some facts about Flappy Bird:

Downloads till february :        50 million

Banner advertising :             50.000 Dollar profit per day

He was earning till feburay :  1,5 million Dollar

Time to make the game :       3 days

Maybe a Videopac/Odyssey game is also a goldmine  :D

If you don't Flap (hit the joystick) the bird will fall out of the sky.

Iīm sorry Janzl, I really not fan of this game. To be honest I think if it was originally release for a Vpac/Ody, back in the days, many people will dislike it. Thereīs a lot of games with similar formula that should be better. Atariīs Dolphin, for instance, is at least more creative.

BTW: Cow Fever is far better than this ;)

I know. I almost took a beating when I said I did not like the music from "Titanic" :o
Anyway I just wanted to see how it could look on an Ody. Maybe Iīll try some scroll test and woh knows I got some entusiasm on it.

Ok, hereīs a preview. Let me know. Too slow? too fast? What about the space for the bird pass. Is it too large, too narrow?

Title: Re: Calling all homebrewers: Ody wants a Flappy Bird too!
Post by: TomBeck on February 23, 2014, 08:32:24 PM
Its fantastic how quick you have made this preview.

In my opinion its not to slow or fast. With a little bit practise its ok, but it makes me a little bit agressive.  >:D

The scrolling looks great. For a preview good, but I know you. The endgame will look much better (with Plus features).

Which producer had time to bring it on cartridge? Oh damn. 2014 is full. Maybe 2015  :D

(Maybe you use a balloon instead of the bird and call it Loony Balloon 2, then you have a Videopac/Odyssey exclusive game)

No it doesnīt. Anyway, I added a score. So I can see how you doing. Also you can return to the game pushing control down.

Unfortunately its now to late in germany and a hard week is waiting. Now with a score I saw how bad I am. Only 10 after a few tries.

Maybe the bird is to fat, or better, I am too tired  :D

I will try it in the next days. Many thanks Rafael for your work !!!

Well, hereīs some updates. The ways are larger, too.
Now I planning to give it a rest.

Maybe the new graphic power from PS 4 and Xbox one had burn out there brains, so they could only play games like this  :D

(This couldn`t happen, of course, with a Videopac/Odyssey user)  ;:)

Finally got around to testing it.

It looks really funny, don't know how many sprites you have left but you could try to use more then one for the bird. Just so it looks a little more like the real "Flappy".

One point is that the way you control the bird is not like it is in Flappy. In the "real flappy" one press on the button is just one "flap". This means that the bird gets a little lift but if you don't press again, the bird will fall. So the tapping of the action-button determines the way the bird flies.
In your game when I keep the button pressed down the bird keeps on flying upwards. The duration of pressing down the action button shouldn't make any difference. One press is just one flap :-)

Keep up the good work Rafael. You are getting there  8)

Title: Re: Calling all homebrewers: Ody wants a Flappy Bird too!
Post by: Rafael on February 27, 2014, 01:07:33 AM
Well, I used all sprites and chars.
I never played this game (in that form). I just downloaded and played the Atari version you pointed at the beggin of topic. In this game the bird keep flying while you keep the action pressed. Anyway, I watched some videos and I suspected it work how you described. At first I think, maybe it should be a good option to make it like the Atari verion, because it may be less tiring and also less prejudicial for controls (itīs not easy to find a replacing control where I live). But hereīs a version one flap by touch.

OMG! I havent' laughed this much in a long time... (Not your fault Rafael). Just something about the simplicity of the game, and that 'this' is what all the craze is about? I tiny flapping bird going through gaps in pipes. Okay. I find it funny for some reason. It play good, bit tough, but that is fine. Like how the bird flaps and all. The odd green plane, have no idea.

I think this should be expanded, but I also think this would make a good addition to another release (like two for one). By itself, it would need a lot more IMHO.

Post by: Janzl on February 28, 2014, 09:15:23 AM
Yes! That's the way it should be!  8) And already quite hard to play!

Now the only thing left is random height for the opening between the tubes, and no green plane popping up (at least on O2EM, haven't tested it on real hardware)

I like the sounds and also the cloudy background.

@Ozyr: yes the game should be this simple, it is indeed what makes it fun and you keep on trying to beat your highscore.
Maybe there should be a multigame release with other minigames like in the first O2/Vpac releases. "Saved people" comes to mind. Can't remember just by heart if there were more but I am sure Rafael has some on his sleeves.
They should call it the "Time-wasters series" ;-)

I havenīt noticed this grenn plane. Naturally thereīs a lot of things Iīm planning to do here. First, I have to fix the screen limits. Also Iīm plannig to random the pipes and also change itīs colors, add high score and an intro screen and plus gfx.

Ugh... this f*&king thing.... Don't we already have flappy bird on videopac?

Its called cavity

Yes its literally 2 minutes of work modding cavity and no, i'm not going to release it.
Now ask us homebrewers to make some REAL games hmmmkay?

Revival, stop bitching  :D

Every system needs a Flappy Bird so does the Vpac and Ody.

And if you consider Flappy Bird the same as Cavity but also want homebrewers to create some real games then you are not doing you own game any justice!  ;D

I'd get it, if it was not as hard as Astrododge! :D

Technically cavity is a flappy bird with a somewhat intelligent pickup system (w/ picking up the blinking pickup at the right time to slow down) from a time without any flapping birds..
Although not my best game, i am still proud of how it turned out and definitely prefer it to flappy bird.

On that subject:
Only regrets about my own games so far was my blind-sighter obsession of tweaking the first levels of air-assault to make the landing-gear reward possible. While in it self is a GREAT challenge to do in the game, it completely destroys the difficulty curve of the game. The rest of the game is actually pretty decent.
Also i wanted to include more in Down! but wasn't able to include it due to technical limitations.

I actually like the difficulty of Astrododge and would probably not change it if i had the chance, but i agree it can be a steep wall to climb for a new player. Once you are 'in the zone' though it is awesome. I have people come up to me that also own the coleco/msx version and tell me they prefer the videopac one. There is something hypnotic about that engine-humming i guess ;-)

With so many games for our Videopac/O2 system, I think it`s time to rename 2600 Connection.

A name that "connect" both systems.

Maybe:

26002 Connection
