Title: Dropping a Bomb
Post by: Chris! on September 01, 2014, 09:09:25 AM
Here's my new idea for a game. I just started programming it a few hours ago. It's a Kaboom! clone. Press action to make the guy move. He doesn't drop bombs yet, and there's no plates (?) to catch the bombs yet. This is just to see if I could do it. The original Kaboom! for the Atari 2600 was 2k, and since I can only make 2k games for the time being, I thought it would be perfect. And also seeing Kaboom's popularity (which I don't understand myself). So anyway, I'm calling this "Dropping a Bomb", unless someone can think of a better name for it.

How about 'Bomb Drop'!?

I thought of Bomb Drop. But it just sounds too matter-of-factly.

Okay, how about...

Armageddon
Falling Star
Carbon Bunker Wave
Salvo!
Blowout!
Outbreak!

or what Janzl stated

or make up something else. Up to you.

Hi Chris

I remember back in March of 2012 you programmed a start of a Kaboom! clone for the Odyssey 2:

http://atariage.com/forums/blog/168/entry-8979-kaboom-for-the-odyssey2/ (http://atariage.com/forums/blog/168/entry-8979-kaboom-for-the-odyssey2/)

I thought that was a great start! I like the looks of your new one so far!

 I like the name KABLAM!

And how about this: instead of a mad bomber, you are working as a waiter in a restaurant. The chef has gone crazy and is throwing meatballs! You have to
catch the meatballs with your plates!

how about this for a name:

MEATBALLS!

Tim's idea is not bad at all. Plus you won't find Activision coming after you then.  >:D

How about calling it "Drop it like it's hot".  :D

I'd love to do the meatball thing, but the Odyssey 2's color palette won't let me. I can, however, make them tomatoes, like in this binary file. It took me a while to figure out why his hands kept changing into a ship on real hardware. It was because the starting point of the bomb, er, tomato was overlapping with his hands. So I moved the tomato down and this should work. The Evil Chef is now throwing tomatoes down, but there's nothing to catch them yet.

So I'm thinking "This seems a lot like Fatso! What can I do to differentiate it from that game?" So I thought of an idea. The evil chef is throwing four different items at you. You must collect four of each item without duplicating one. Once you do that successfully, you'll get a point. There will be little markers to tell you which items you already collected on the side or the bottom or somewhere. I have two sprites left to make something to catch the items with at the bottom. I put a chef hat on the evil chef. Or perhaps I should name him Chief Chef or Chef Chief, and have you be the apprentice chef or something. Anyway, the four items Chief Chef throws down are a slice of cheese, an egg, a tomato and a head of lettuce. What do you think of this idea?

Chris

I like it! The egg looks more like an onion.  maybe make it be an onion instead of an egg?

1. slice of cheese ( off-yellow square)
2. tomato  ( red circle)
3. lettuce ( green circle)
4. onion  (white circle)

Sound good?

Apart from changing where I typed in "egg" in the game code (which I can change to say onion, no code would be changed except variables and game section "titles"), I guess I could call it anything I want it to.

It's up to you.
But in my opinion, the round white circle looks more like an onion than an egg.
If you want to keep it as an egg, then perhaps you can make the sprite have more of an oval shape?

Added a guy at the bottom to catch the stuff that the Chief Chef throws. There is no collision detection yet. It was hard enough to make the guy animate. That and I have a migraine so I don't want to be angry at the dumb computer when my eye hurts any more.

My eyeache passed so I thought I'd work on this some more. Got the item chart done. If you catch something you already have, the game will end. If you catch all 4 items, the chart will clear (and a point will be scored, but there's no score yet.)

Coming along nicely! I am happy to report that 2600 Connection will be publishing this game on cartridge in 2015.

Great work, Chris. I am enjoying it and it reminds me of days long ago of having fun playing Pressure Cooker (by Activision) -- when I first got that cart many, many years ago.

Thanks. Here is a screenshot in case you aren't able to use an emulator right now.

This took several hours. The dumb computer was not cooperating with me. But I've added in the score and high score. So with all the things in place, unless there are any bugs, is make improvements. One thing I want to do is make the game go faster with time. But it's really hot in my room for some reason and I must leave it for a bit and cool down. Here is a bin and a pic.

Now I'm having problems. I put in some sounds, and now whenever the game ends and you press action, the tens digit in the high score (the pink group) becomes a 4. WHY?!??!?!?!??!?!  :'(

OK, I fixed it. New version, too. It took a while to find the perfect spot for both scores and the chart so they wouldn't run into each other and cause ickiness. If something doesn't fit on screen, let me know. I just checked with the Homer emulator and it doesn't show the chart, but it shows up on real hardware and o2em.

New version.
What's changed:
I moved the scores down at the bottom and moved the chart up to the near top. Chart now actual chart made with grids so it is more easily seen what is missing. I tested this on a real Odyssey 2. Still, let me know if you run into any problems.

I love the new design! Much easier to see what items you need. I like the current and high scores at the bottom, too. I noticed that the speed of the items dropping changed once on level 3. Can you change it so the speed increase is not so dramatic... maybe just a little faster on a gradual increase?

Here is the latest version. Tell me what you think.
