Title: Dragon/CoCo Multi-cart and Videopac Extension
Post by: Roland on October 02, 2016, 06:11:43 PM
 ;)
I just wanted to present another Multi-cart option for Videopacs, on this website. (Right in the beginning, no I’m not „VectrexRoli“ of the youtube-Channel, I just happen to have the same name, Roland.)

There already is a lot of information about the project out there on "AtariAge" (http://atariage.com/forums/topic/242786-multi-cartridge-for-dragoncoco-2-available/ (http://atariage.com/forums/topic/242786-multi-cartridge-for-dragoncoco-2-available/)) and on "The Dragon Archive" (http://archive.worldofdragon.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5366&sid=ee0381c6769ee9f55a0ad4eeffa55967 (http://archive.worldofdragon.org/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=5366&sid=ee0381c6769ee9f55a0ad4eeffa55967)) and I do not intend to double all that information in this place, but since the topic now is also Videopac-related, I write a brief introduction, as "m-j-b" invited me to at http://atariage.com/forums/topic/254899-dragon-multi-cartridge-to-odyssey-2-extension/#entry3556437 (http://atariage.com/forums/topic/254899-dragon-multi-cartridge-to-odyssey-2-extension/#entry3556437).

The project started 2013 as a Multi-cartridge for roms for the Dragon 32 home computer. Back then, I was unsuccessfully looking for such a cartridge, therefore decided to make one for my own use and offered the extra parts to the Dragon Archive’s followers. People from all over the world PM'ed me one after another, asking for a cartridge. So I went on and improved the cartridge step by step. Today version 1.62 is current. Some Tandy Color Computer 2 users also joined.
Lately I've been building interface cartridges to connect the Dragon/CoCo Multi-cartridge to the VECTREX game console and also to the Odyssey2/PHILIPS G7x00. Primarily, I had my Dragon/CoCo customers in mind, to expand their possibilities, but also new customers contacted me.

The Multi-cartridge holds up to 64 8k (or 4k/2k) ROM images. It also can store 16k ROM images on adjacent slots. The cartridge uses a single 27C4001 EPROM (512 kBytes).
ROM images are selected by setting two 16 position rotary switches. A two digit LED display shows the number of the selected image (00 ... 63). On Dragon/CoCo Computers "AUTOSTART" can be switched on and off. An additional switch ("BANK-SIZE") combines the selected even numbered slot with the following one, providing a 16k slot for larger images (Dragon, Vectrex only).
The Dragon/CoCo Multi-cartridge can also be used for other systems. Currently there are Extension Cartridges (interfaces) available, which make the cartridge compatible with the VECTREX video game console and with the Odyssey 2/PHILIPS G7000/G7200/G7400 consoles. A compilation of rom-files for all three systems can be burned on a single eprom, adding versatility to the device.
It is an eprom based system, so you probably should own an Eprom-programmer and an eprom eraser, which are cheap and easy to get on ebay.

I'm usually making small batches of 10 items. It's not big business, but a non-commercial, self-sustaining hobby project.

Current prices (may change, so please inquire, before ordering), as long as stocks last:
  • Dragon/CoCo Multi-cartridge: US$29.99 (incl. EPROM)
  • additional EPROM: US$3.00
  • Videopac Extension Cartridge: US$12.99
  • Vectrex Extension Cartridge: US$12.99
  • shipping by DHL priority airmail, registered: EUR€ 6.20 (approx. US$7.00)
Euros and US$ welcome, just convert with current currency converter. Usually I'm using Paypal. Regular money transfer also is possible.

Cheers,
Rolo

Roland is always a good name!  :D
You bet! ;:)
But the rest of my family was not so convinced, when my parents revealed my name. But that's a different story. Some decades ago, this name was not so rare.
I getting asked quite frequently in the forums, if I'm VectrexRoli. You made yourself a name with your really funny and high quality videos.

Wow Interton VC 4000!  I know about another Interton Multicart project, which is not finished yet I think. Do you think about making also adapters for other consoles of the Radofin 1282 / 1392 console family?

Hi Roland  ;),

Thanks for asking! Well I know more or less only the names of those consoles. As far as I remember, they should be somewhat compatible to the VC 4000. Maybe they are even using the same cartridge slot ???
It's a problem to make things for hardware, you do not even have.
I'd like to see first, if I can sell two or three of the Interton Extensions. Funny enough, Videopac Extension sell to a certain extend, Vectrex Extensions not. There always is the risk of piling up hardware at home.

So, the answer to your question is:
  • Not planned.
  • I don't know.
  • Only if there is a good reason to make those.
  • I'd have to gather information about these consoles first.

Cheers
Roland, also

The Dragon/CoCo multi-cart to INTERTON ELECTRONICS VC4000 Video Computer Extension now is available!

I made another extension cartridge for the Dragon/CoCo Multi-cart:

Both cartridges connected:

Plugged into the INTERTON Extension cartridge, the multi-cartridge is capable of playing roms on the INTERTON VC4000, which do not require extra cartridge RAM (i.e. AI-games like Chess, Backgammon, ...). Even some non-INTERTON roms are running. ;)

I checked these roms:

Not for now, but what would I need to play the Vectrex games?
What exactly IŽll need to buy and what IŽll receive?

Well, you'd need a Multi-cart and the Vectrex Extension.
You'd get 2 pcbs including eprom.
The setup would be capable of playing all Vectrex games up to 16k (incl.).
If you wanted to change the content of the eprom, you'd need a programmer an an UV-raser (ebay).
If you want to play ONLY Vectrex games, there are other devices out there, made especially for the Vectrex.
The Multi-cart's advantage is the option, to use it for a few different systems.

From what I can tell from the video, brightness is set way to high and it seems that when the seller put the cover on the back of the Vectrex, he pushed in the potentiometer axis of brightness controls. I hope that potentiometer is still alive, some donŽt survive that when you do that.

Yes that sometimes happens when you set the brightness to maximum. Just lower the brightness a little and the "star" will be gone.

Normally yes, but it could be that potentiometer is broken already as it was pushed in, so first the back of the case needs to be removed and hopefully it is still working.

Thanks  by explanations
Vectrexrolli and Janzl! :)
I just received it today
In fact the brightness potentiometer was defective This part I knew, what I did not know is that the brightness could be detrimental to the gameplay and the console.
Anyway, I opened the console and the button was there, spinning, non-stop as if dusted, but nothing happened, the glow was still strong. So I moved it gently to the left and to the right and the brightness diminished I can not control the brightness at will, but it was good to play now I've never seen a Vectrex in my life, it's really cool! :D
