Title: Here I am (new member)
Post by: Little_Rabbit on January 18, 2018, 02:34:16 PM
Hi,

Further an invitation from janzl, here I am as a new member of your forum and little community :).

I'm 52 years old and I live in France, a territory where the Videopacs  are present as many different models sold under many different brands :).

I'm more an ATARI addict and specialist, but because I started a collection of consoles and home computers in the early 90's, I also have several Videopac in my collection (3 or 4 I believe).

Recently, I decided to test the strangest one : a model I found in a yard sales in 1993 or so. It was in the suburb of Paris, a city called Colombes, just next another city called Suresnes.

This videopac is strange because it has absolutely no labels or brand on it, nothing. It is shaped as a JoPac, you know, the French variation made by Thomson, and sold under various brand of the group, such as Brandt or Saba. Mine came with quite a lot of cartridges. Many cartridges show marks of opening, and hand written numbers or text. I believe they contain EPROM with other programs than what they should contain. Because Suresnes was the city where the French headquarter of Philips was located, I'm wondering if this JoPac could have belonged to some former employee of Philips or Thomson... (this is purely hypothetical, I actually don't know ;)).

It stayed in its box for 25 years and plugged it in for the first time yesterday ! :) Good news : it is a Videopac+, with an RGB scart video output !! Bad news : it's not working :'(...

Anyway, I'm pleased to come onboard, and I'm gonna open another post to discuss with you about the issue of my JoPAc not working.

I look forward discovering this world of the Videoapac, that is rather new to me :).

Kind regards

Also from me: Welcome to this forum and the fantastic dreamland of Videopac.

Your Jopac look very interesting. Also the keyboard is not correct. It`s from a G7400.

Welcome to the forum!  :)

You should post the pictures your showed me about the technical difficulties you are experiencing with your console. I'm sure people here will be able to tell you what might be wrong with it.

Have fun here!

Hi guys,

Thank you very much for your kind words  :-*.

Yes, I'm gonna open another subject for its restauration :).

I also noticed the keyboard overlay is not the one supposed to be present on a JoPac, but the one from a Videopac. Considering where I found it, with many non official cartridges, I'm wondering if this JoPac could be some kind of prototype or a preproduction sample unit...

I'm gonna submit more pictures to your expert eyes ! ;)

See you soon.

Welcome to the forum  :)

I'm already curious about the cartridges. Did you try them on your other VPs?
Looking forward to their content and looking

Hi guys,

Sorry for not having given any news sooner than thatÖ :-\

No, I didnít test the cartridges until yesterday. I brought back home another Videopac to test them :).

Before testing them, I opened the ones showing traces telling they had already been opened in the past.

I was wrong thinking they could have contained EPROMs ! Actually, all of them contain mask ROM. What is curious is that they show hand written information, and several of them seem to have been hand (badly !) soldered ! Have a look at the attached pictures.

I also noticed that on those already opened cartridges, the aluminium shell around the edge connector is not present (where it is on the others) : do you know if depending on the production period, Philips ended to manufacture the cartridges without this metallic part ?

I tested them on the 2nd Videopac I bought back home : they look normal to me. But Iím not a great expert about the Videopac games ;). Since thereís no EPROM at all, I guess it doesnít make sense to dump those ROMs to see if there are any differences with the known released versions.

Thatís pretty much about it. It still remains a little bit mysterious. My feeling is it belonged to somebody working at Philips in France. Somebody having access to mask ROM, possibly faulty cartridges returned by resellers and that were converted to give them a new life.

What is your opinion? :)

PS: because I canít attach more than 3 or 4 medium resolution pictures per post, Iím gonna post extra pictures bellow ;)

More of those "opened" cartridges.

For the last picture, it is the comparaison between the standard cartridges (the one on the top), and the "opened" one without the alluminium shell.

All Videopac cartridges should have this metallic shell around the edge connector.
