Title: Videopac 42 : Das Geheimnis der Ringe ???
Post by: grgh on November 22, 2007, 02:03:05 PM
Does anyone know what language is "Das Geheimnis der Ringe":

http://cgi.ebay.fr/PHILIPS-VIDEOPAC-42-Das-Geheimnis-der-Ringe-OVP_W0QQitemZ150182364430QQihZ005QQcategoryZ54982QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem#ebayphotohosting

It seems to have come in a German box, but my German version is not like that, and I only have a note of the following variations:

French   La Quete Des Anneaux
English   Quest For The Rings
German   Die Suche Nach Den Ringen
Brazilian   Em Busca Dos Aneis Perdidos
Netherlands   Speurtocht Naar De Ringen
Spanish   La Busqueda De Los Anillos

Don't know who won the auction but it wasn't me :-(

So what does "Die Suche Nach Den Ringen" mean?
Any idea what this is?

"die suche nach den ringen" means "the search of the rings". i won this item on ebay ;). the cartridge is the same, written "die suche nach den ringen", but as you wrote, the manual title is different (das geheimnis der ringe). strange isn't it? i hope it's the original one. Maybe there was a failure print just on the manual, when they released the german version. maybe this one is rare. who knows, i will inform you about it later, until i'll get it. actually i didn't realize it, until you post this question about it on the forum.

So why the different German names, and why did they print a version saying "Das Geheimnis der Ringe"?

There must be a simple explanation!?

i really don't know, maybe it's a fake manual, but i don't think so.
i really don't see any sense why they changed the title, because the game on the cartridge and the boxart has another title. i can ask the seller, maybe he knows more about it.

I just checked both german 42's I have (shiny and matt). both have manuals that say "Das Geheimnis der Ringe" -> does anyone have one that says "Die Suche nach den Ringen" or was that only printed on the box and cart ?

I've been struggling with the same thing a couple years ago, and decided that all German 42's are like that.

Still, I'd love for someone to prove me wrong :)

so every german manual has got the title "das geheimnis der ringe" instead of "die suche nach den ringen"?
???

Well, the game title is "Die Suche nach den Ringen" (The Quest for the Rings) but the manual title is "Das Geheimnis der Ringe" (The Secret of the Rings) because they explain the secret of the rings in the manual. Something like that. It's like with some of the Infocom adventures where the manual is not simply an explanation what happens in the game, but is something like a book on its own ...
