Title: www.videopac.com
Post by: grgh on December 29, 2007, 09:04:29 AM
Hi All,

Well I finally did it, two weeks in China with a laptop and Dreamweaver, plus no understandable telly to watch, and I put something together that resembles a website.

I've mentioned it in another thread, but maybe you didn't all read that one, so I'm announcing it here.

It has several bits still to do, and yes I'm sorry but it does look more like a 'come see my collection' page, but there are several sites out there containing manuals scans in nice tables now and I wanted to do something that looked different, plus my first attempt at doing that looked awful. Last night I uploaded pages for French PLUS and Mag O2 videopacs, this morning I'm doing the 'posters' page.

I feel that such a domain name needs to be half decent if it will in some way represent our community, so if you think it really sucks then let me know.

Finally, I would appreciate it if you added me to your links.

Cheers, George.

Very nice site with interesting photos and infos on the different Videopac variations. Well done grgh! I will surely add your site to my link list as soon as my website will be relaunched.

But please change that text in your first post here - black text on red background make my eyes hurt LOL.

Looking good.... but where is my link on your site!?  :P

Curious - what is with the sections that have blue boxes with the word Text above them. Unfinished areas I would guess. No big deal, just wondering. I've got plenty of unfinished stuff myself - things that will probably take the rest of my life to try to complete.

I'll be adding your link, along with LISTs soon, as I've been putting that off for too long.

It's on the front page, didn't you see the icon for the links page!!  ;) Althopugh I was in China at the time with no internet access from the laptop, so I didn't realise your O2 stuff was on sub-pages.

But yes I haven't created the page yet, it's still all in a notepad doc waiting for me to tidy it up, and that is what the pages saying 'intro' and 'text' are, if I don't get round to them soon I'll just add under construction links.

Having gone through my paperwear, I've created two completely new sections :

Game booklets - Only cover pics at the moment, but I may do full scans later

Console manuals - Only cover pics at the moment, rather boring with these covers!

I've also updated the following sections since my last post :

index page - added links for the new sections

posters - one language updated and one new poster addition

accessories - added the bits I have

Route66 page created with doc scans : http://www.videopac.com/games/66route66.html

Those two and the 'buying' page are the only main pages now needing some content. I want to get the links page done this weekend, I've started it 3 times over the last couple of months but saved it I don't know where each time...

You should still get a page, just with nothing much on it.

very off-topic: I just noticed the boxed Jopac system and the pictures of games on the back side ... as far as I see there is a picture of Western+ and all the other games are the released ones (not all, though) - am I right ? can you maybe make a bigger picture of the Western+ box ?

Yeah I noticed that when I put it up  :-\ I'd already taken a 2nd set of pics of the front as they were originally laid out that way as well. I did the same thing with the paperbox Radiolas!

Nice spot, I didn't notice that! I added the original full size pic to the bottom of the page :

The screen shot is not good enough to see so I'll take a better pic of that bit in the next few days.

thanx a lot ! would be fun (and pretty easy) to just add the original background gfx like it was supposed to be and release it with the original cover art :-)

Title: Re: www.videopac.com
Post by: grgh on April 19, 2008, 11:05:40 PM
Yeah I see where your going with this. The box is fairly beaten up but I'd be prepared to put it in a scanner if the gfx was going to be done and see what we get.

This image can be found at www.videopac.org as well.

Do you think that screenshot is a drawing? Did they make the playing area smaller or do you think you would just walk all over it?

I seem to remember being offered a proto for Western+ a while back, do we know what happened to it?

Title: Re: www.videopac.com
Post by: Rene_G7400 on April 20, 2008, 01:34:54 AM
That screenshot looks definitely like a drawing.
The normal version also has a border around the playing area (although it looks smaller).
I've never heard of any prototype of this game.

I've bought a Jopac 1450 (Continental Edison/SABA) on Ebay a few weeks ago for 15 Euro. I thought these consoles were rare and expensive?

Title: Re: www.videopac.com
Post by: manopac on April 30, 2008, 02:38:24 PM
lets face it ... no consoles are expensive anymore, as only very very few people collect console variations, and they have most of them already ... I skipped a N60 for 20? the other day ...

Title: Re: www.videopac.com
Post by: grgh on April 30, 2008, 04:29:10 PM
I paid 87 euros for my 1450 on ebay from Nico about this time last year, its still the only one I have ever seen on ebay. Do you have a link to yours? Most likely nobody else saw it.

It might be worth starting a console rarity list, like the Radiola & Siera lists? (as in, lets get a count of how many we have on this forum)

I actually never saw it running, but the really strange thing is ... I looked it up today in the morning on web archive ...

http://web.archive.org/web/*/videopac.com (http://web.archive.org/web/*/videopac.com)

Edit: the last working version is from 1999 - no images working, and on some pages you have to select the text to make it visible, as the background and font is white and there probably was an image in the background ...

With the disappearance of videopac.org, videopac.com is now the number one listing if searching on google.com or google.co.uk for 'videopac' so thanks to everyone who has linked to me or mentioned my site in any way  ;)

Just need to mention 'g7000' or 'g7400' more on the pages now and I should be the number 1 hit for europe  :D

Next need to get up the rankings for O2...  8)

You do have a MATT paperbox number 2 ? a "made in france" paperbox number 2 ? cause I am pretty sure as well that it does not exist ...

and I think we all have lots of SHINY paperbox number 2's  :) I use them as packaging material sometimes ... (not really, just to emphasis how common these are  ;))

Man, now you are really asking me a bad question!!!!! I packed my paperbox collection away in the attic 2 years ago!!!! I would really have to delve in the deepest part of my attic to find it, but I'm pretty sure I have the one George is missing. I would not have posted otherwise.  ;:)

it would be REALLY cool if you could dig it out again ... just to confirm it does exist ... cause then I have to keep looking for it :-) (and I guess others as well ...)

btw, wouldn't that be a nice "homebrew" project ? making paperboxes for 2 and 17 ? :-) would look soooo much better on the shelf ...

is there any interest in that ? (would be an easy task I guess :-) )

It would be VERY easy to do, but you would only probably need 10 copies to be produced for the 10 nutters that are out there that seriously collect videopac stuff, I'd be one of them!! ;) ;) ;)

I have seen the paperbox in that format, so I'm sure your right. I'm not sure if we would be able to prove how Philips always shipped it now though... ???

Title: Re: www.videopac.com
Post by: ANDYRYALS on March 10, 2009, 03:15:35 PM
Well we still have to confirm a Radiola plastic box "A" for so far there are only one known copy of Siera "A" or Radiola "A" paperbox, so any variation of "A" is extremely rare,

Title: Re: www.videopac.com
Post by: manopac on March 10, 2009, 04:00:06 PM
IF it is a variation and not just someone stucking the paperbox version manuals in a plastic box ... so far I don't see a variation here ... especially not an ultrarare one - or do you want to buy one ? I just so happen to have one somewhere around here :-) Someone else wants to buy an empty Videopac A paperbox ?

As for what Philips shipped: I have 2 videopacs at home that are "repacks" of paperbox games, but for those philips produced a one-sided cover that was stuck in front of the pure-black cover of the early videopac games, so I am sure they would have done something similar if they were to repack the Videopac A (just guessing here of course)

I've never seen a separate sheet for the pure black manuals. Black manuals only went up to videopac 16. By the time Philips were shipping in plastic they had converted manuals to have colour covers. As 'A' doesn't have a manual, it makes sense they just started shipping it as is in plastic cases.

In the UK plastic cases were given away for free to anyone who requested them as replacements for tatty paperboxes. I don't think you'll be able to prove one way or the other, but personally I think Philips would have ended up shipping 'A' both ways.

Yeah absolutely, at the moment there is so much to picture I haven't got much beyond that, but it was always the plan to start doing that next.

Some of the pages could do with a reformat as well, I'm currently working on the club magazine section as it only has UK stuff at the moment. The long list of large pictures doesn't always work so good, although I'd like to keep the big pictures in there somewhere. For one, it starts these interesting discussions.

when they started to ship the "new" manual style, they had to much stock of the old cartridges and manuals left, thats why they made a one-sided inlay and stuck it in front of the others ... I do have such inlays for Nr. 12 and 9, if anyone wants I can take pictures of them and put em up ... its basically the same image but a little bit smaller as it got a white border around it. I am pretty sure that Philips only sent it out in plastic boxes, cause even on pictures of carts in catalogues you can always see it like that, even when mixed with carts in plastic boxes ...

and like you say, lots of carts were stuck into plastic cases later, but I suspect it was only people doing that and not philips ... besides the new flashy colourful carts in plastic boxes they would never have been able to sell the old stock if they just repacked it with the original manual only - and especially not like in the case of "A" which doesn't have a proper cover at all ...

Title: Re: www.videopac.com
Post by: grgh on March 10, 2009, 07:06:41 PM
I though 'A' was designed for dealers to put messages across window display TVs, rather than sold as a 'game', although I realise it does appear on posters and probably was available for general sale.

As for the inlay, I have a load of those for Radiola (I call them "Radiola - Siera style", pics available, web page coming one day), but on closer inspection it appears its just something that people have done by cutting up a poster. But you can list them as ultra ultra rare if you like  ;)

I'd would like to see some pics if you can put them up.

Title: Re: www.videopac.com
Post by: manopac on March 12, 2009, 08:22:29 AM
Videopac A definitly was for sale ... they advertised it with "write birthday greetings" and stuff like that, even though it was probably not the most sophisticated of games it was intended for the end user and not for sellers :-)

My inlays don't look like somone cut them out of a poster, I am more or less certain that they were sold this way ... they even do have the original index card which is another clue that they were not just taken out of the paper box and put into a plastic case

and I wouldn't call them even rare, I'd rather see them as an "unusual" variation I haven't seen to often - and as you say, chances still are they are not even real ... who knows, maybe even shops used to produce these variation themselves to sell there old stock ... I guess they had to buy the games from philips first and were not able to just exchange them for the newer plastic ones once the paperbox variants were discontinued ...

pictures:
http://guttenbrunner.com/CIMG3337.JPG (http://guttenbrunner.com/CIMG3337.JPG)

http://guttenbrunner.com/CIMG3342.JPG (http://guttenbrunner.com/CIMG3342.JPG)

intresting to note: the cover of 9 is printed on some kind of cardboard, but its apparently not just glued on it, as it doesn't come off even at the corners (I even tried to unstick it, impossible without destroying it) - they were not able to fit the manual inside the plastic case, so it was necessary to make that cover more sturdy ...

Thanks, couldn't have done it without you  :)

Actually the design does remind me of your Jopac pages, I think that was the one anyway. It wasn't deliberate, I just wanted to try and get everything on the page better, rather than the long lists my pages are currently ending up like. I'll probably do a bit of revamping of all the pages, not right this minute though as I have quite a few more bits to add.

Actually I have a bunch of pages that aren't yet linked off the main page and I haven't mentioned yet, so getting them on will come first.

That's pretty interesting, as you can see that everything was already over in the US, when the hype reached its peak in Europe, and later Brazil.

Title: Re: www.videopac.com
Post by: Rene_G7400 on June 05, 2009, 09:30:49 AM
I still wonder why they have waited so long before starting the clubs and magazines, considering the console was released already in 1978. Maybe sales were dropping in 1982 (because of the competition of newer systems) and this was an attempt to boost sales?

Title: Re: www.videopac.com
Post by: grgh on June 05, 2009, 01:21:55 PM
I get the impression from the UK mags that this was probably all done by one marketing person when they felt like it, I don't think the magazines were taken very seriously, I suppose it was still a new approach at the time.

Title: Re: www.videopac.com
Post by: ccc--- on June 06, 2009, 07:59:48 AM
I think that the time was still not here in 1978 - 1980. Beginning in 1982, the big video games wave swapped over from the US to Europa, and sales probably began boosting. So that was the right time to launch a club with magazine. Others started clubs too (Atari!), so Philips had to follow.

I would have bought (or wished) a video game earlier, if I had known about it. But massive marketing started not before 1982, at least here in Austria.

Excellent spot! but I've just tested this again and I can confirm it was indeed the monitor adjustment :(

The 5 US prototypes came with a load of other stuff, including what looked like two photocopied manuals, which I put to one side to check out later in case they were anything special. The good news is they were something special, and are original prototype documentation for Freedom Fighters and Pick Axe Pete.

I've put pics under the FF & PAP sections for anyone interested:

I think that this is probably the single best Videopac site I've seen in a long long time, keep up the very good work George!

Cheers mate  :) It's getting bigger but I'd like to start adding more text.

Anybody got the original version of this?

Very handy anyway, thank you.

I wish I had a complete copy of Carls site, but seems unlikely. I think in the future these archive sites will be very useful.

Yeah, but unfortunately they seem to backup sites only until a special "depth". Pages deeper in the site seem not to be backud up :(

You might need to do a SHIFT-RELOAD in your browser to make sure you're not looking at cached pages.

Added new menus for new pages from front page: http://www.videopac.com/
Also:
Created page for eprom readers: http://www.videopac.com/eprom.html
Created page for PCBs (more to do here!): http://www.videopac.com/pcb.html
Created page for shipping boxes: http://www.videopac.com/shipping.html
   Created page for fonts: http://www.videopac.com/fonts.html
Created page for Radiola, Siera style: http://www.videopac.com/radiola_siera_style.html
Created page to document purchased collections worth recording: http://www.videopac.com/collections.html
Added new menus for pages already mentioned:
   Canadian page: http://www.videopac.com/canadian.html
   Japanese page: http://www.videopac.com/japanese.html
   Prototypes page: http://www.videopac.com/prototypes.html
Updated Canadian page with links to game pages.

On your website you mention that Canadian Odyssey2 games were released in plastic cases, but as you can see on this picture of my collection, some Canadian games were also released in cardboard boxes.

Don't let it frustrate you, when you still have a lot to collect it is so much more fun. I have all the VP's complete and now I only collect the homebrews and the extremely rare ones which are just too expensive (talking Interpol and Clay Pigeon plus here.)

Hi Janzl
I have all VP, but only the "new" versions - not the black ones. Also Parker and Imagic. I am missing some homebrews/proto.: Clay Pigeon+, Mission Impossilbe, Power Lords, Spiderman box and first version of Route 66 ( i am so glad to have Interpol  :D ). I have some Jopacs and Odyssey.
So till now, i am not sure, to collect Radiola, Sierra, the black ones or brazil games. For the future i am loocking for Jopac and Odyssey games.

Black is easiest but probably most boring to look at, Radiola is next easiest and can be completed with time (probably 3 years+ with dedication), Jopac is probably next but has some expensive rare ones, Brazil most difficult due to the geography and rarities but in my opinion also the best looking with Jopac  8)

And as for Siera, well I don't think anyone will ever complete that set! I'll certainly try and put anyone off whilst I'm still collecting  ;)

Yes unfortunately I lost the .com address and my service provider was no help at all in trying to resolve that. For some reason they don't tell you when .com is about to expire, but they do for others.

So now only the .co.uk will work.

Have only I the problem to open videopac.co.uk  ???

I get only:

Apache/2.2.3 (CentOS) Server at videopac.co.uk Port 80

What a pity. I love this page!

The .co.uk has a redirect to .com, I'm trying to get the service provider to remove it. However, as I lost control of the .com I can't make the website available yet.

Would anyone be interested in a zipped up copy of the website? It's only a bunch of flat html and pictures, there is nothing interactive about it. If there is interest I'll zip it up and see if I can make it available for download somewhere.

Would anyone be interested in the www.videopac.co.uk domain name?

www.videopac.co.uk expires 9th March 2018, I'm not going to renew it so there is a window of opportunity for someone to grab it.
