Title: Frogger
Post by: RickO2 on March 01, 2008, 08:26:33 AM
Our first Parker Brothers Game of the Month is Frogger.  From Turtles dodging bugs to Frogs dodging cars.  Frogger of course has been a title on countless systems and atleast two older versions before the Playstation updates.  Our PAL friend will have an edge as most NTSC game players did not have this game growing up.  The NTSC version can be found on JD's multi-cart for the Odyssey 2 folk's.

Please share your; memories, thoughts, likes, dislikes, and any Frogger trivia that you know.  Have Fun!

Well I have quite a story with this one. My first computer was a ZX Spectrum. Some years ago i collected all the ROM cartridges that were released via an interface called the Interface 2. Only 10 roms were released, this was them due to being very expensive. It took me about 2 years to get all the roms. Anyway, about 6 weeks ago I heard on the grapevine that Parker were to release Frogger as an interface 2 rom but this only got to prototype stage. Well they have just been rediscovered but you cant play them unless you have a proper interface 2. I have been extremely lucky and managed to get an Eprom blown and some Interface 2 PCB's made up, i know have a complete collection of Parker games that were due to be released on the speccy but never made it, such as Popeye etc. I think that less than 5 copies of the ROM exist including original prototype!!!!!!!

(Without knowing it was the game of the month) I played this version for the first over the weekend.  I'll attempt to play it again and post a score for the spirit of this board.

I'm having trouble figuring out how to time the left most lilly pad.

Ah, yes... This is a problem everyone has with this game.  I thought it was my TV at first, my "gaming tv" is a little 13 inch screen.  Then I hooked it up to my larger TV and still had the same problem.  I think they would have been better off shifting the "lily pads" a little to the right and losing some of the space in-between to make up for it.

No discussion about Frogger would be complete without this comedy bit done for a show called "Seinfeld" in the US.  Enjoy!

Luckily the machine appears to be a fake.  I never realized it when the show aired but if you look at the joystick laying on top near the end it looks like it was made out of wood.

I'm really impressed the title/intro screen.  That hopping frog looks great, but what's RECORDE? J/K    ;)

What?s Frogger you?re playing. The brazilian version shows the word RECORDE it means "HIGH SCORE".

BTW.: The brazilian and the European releases have some diferences, graphics and gameplay. My personal favorite is the euro, since it?s harder than brazilian frogger.

So maybe everyone should post which version they're playing?

Anybody have screenshots showing the differences?

Well, I make a quick screenshot sheet.

Left you?ll see the Euro and right the BR versions.
Some diferences:
1. Intro: In the BR version after the end of music Frogger will blink his eye. In the Euro version you can hear two songs one in the intro and other when there?s a new high score.
2.Street: You?ll see some cars with diferent colors and the truck with diferent sprites. During the game there?s some differences in the gameplay.
3. River: The crocodiles are diferentes, flies and crocodile?s heads have diferent colors, the Euro snake is larger. The most significant  diference is in the Euro version frogger needs to jump in blue area, so a Frogger will appear (it will gave us some flickering). In the BR version, the Frogger needs to jump on the green squares (it will disappear on the next time).

Thanks for the screen shots.  I wonder why the differences.

Anyway...I believe I got 20290 last night.

I don?t know why, maybe Ren? could explain it better, the Euro Frogger not run in the Odyssey BR. All Parker releases have some differences. I also believe, but it?s just a personal opnion, when the Odyssey was release here in Brazil (it was 1983), US was stopping the producion of games and Euro was releasing very few games, so I think some games was used as a kind of laboratory, maybe the brazilian Philips was planning releasing their own games?
Congratulations for you new hi score, saturday I?ll try it. During this week I?m working some new designs.

You just explained it. Parker games were designed for PAL consoles. Because of the timing differences between PAL and NTSC consoles, some PAL games won't run on NTSC consoles. So some things had to be changed to Frogger to make it work on NTSC (60 Hz) consoles. While Philips was working on that they probably thought they could make some improvements to the game as well (the blinking Frogger at the intro screen for example).

In 1983 no more new (NTSC) Odyssey2 games were coming from the U.S. , so Philips started converting european Videopac games which hadn't been released in the U.S. Secret of the Pharaohs is another good example of that. It's an old Videopac game which hadn't been released in the U.S. and wasn't working on NTSC consoles. So they fixed the timing problems and made the game look a lot better too.

I've played about 4 or 5 more times.

Still haven't beat 20920.

(I posted 20290 before...that was incorrect..not by much though)

You know....there are glitches in this game.  Many undeserved deaths.  I've done the same thing twice in order to if I would lose a life again...and sure enough it happens were it's unwarranted.  I've lost lives jumping on logs and the fly.

First I thought I just wasn't seeing what was happening...but it got to be too frequent.

Hi,

I don?t know about the Euro version. In the Br version in the 5th level to 8th level you?ll find poisoned flies (you can?t eat any fly) and some slippery log (but I can?t identify what logs?).
Can someone post the euro rules?

Yes...that must be what's going on.  I studied it more carefully last night.  I am playing the BR version.  I have the Euro, but can't play it cuz I have the American O2.

I noticed on the level where the snake appears....I can no longer eat flies without dying.  So given that and the "slippery log" comment, I guess these are not glitches.

One thing what disapoints me is that it seems that nothing changes after the snake level.  The screens just keep repeating.

My new score:

47400

I'm having joystick issues AGAIN!   :(  I think I'm running out of systems to swap out.  I might have to sit down and fix one this weekend.

How hard (or expensive) is it to get an NTSC Frogger cart?  Even if its just the cart and no case or instructions.

All depends on who/when on ebay and such. I payed around $30 for it (complete) a few years back. If you have the 128-multi-cart, it is on there, and I think that would be the best way to go (if you just want to play the game).

I don?t know if the brazilian version run on the US console? but it?s not so hard to find.

I agree about purchasing the multi-cart for $50 US dollars.  You get allot for your money including both froggers (only the BR version will work on the US console)...but you get so much....all the original common O2 stuff plus Turtles, Killer Bees, Q*Bert, Power Lords et al.  Finding all that stuff on individidual carts would cost a small fortune.  I was hesitant about it as first....but I'm really glad I went that route.

Yes, the Brazil version runs on the O2! (That is the version on the Multi-cart too).

I played Frogger a bit today (testing for the MGC show next week), and the Brazil Frogger works great on the O2 (from the multi-cart - I didn't feel like digging out the real cart).

I'll admit one thing at the moment, I suck at Frogger!  ;D

Just an FYI - I finally got the O2 posted in my blog for the Midwest Gaming Classic for '08 (next weekend).

I put in a plug for the forum, in particular, the Game of the Month for March - check here! (http://www.ozyr.com/ramblings/?p=70)!

Thanks for all the replies on the Frogger game.  I am not sure if I want the multi cart yet, I think I want to buy a few more games by themselves before I go that route, but it is something I will consider.

No big deal. I'll be there in '09, and since I have a job now, I'll be back to normal size next year (bigger O2/VP section again)!  ;)

I'm back in action.  I switched out Odyssey2 consoles so I should be good to go for awhile.  I have been playing Frogger but man do I stink!  I haven't broken 10,000 yet!!!  I did better at the arcade.  I'm not sure why, the game play really isn't that much different.  The left-end "lily pad" is more of a challange but it does give you some slack if you are off a little.    Hopefully I will get some more time to play tonight.

Sorry, but my scores were horrible. Not worth posting here.

One thing I found fun over the weekend at the MGC show, people are really used to the U.S. version of Frogger!
I had the Brazil version running (no PAL systems this year), and most people kept dying when hitting the water points on the far end.  :P  I had to explain to many people that it was a foreign version of the game, and you had to go for the 'land' part at top!
