Title: odyBay
Post by: Janzl on April 09, 2008, 08:50:10 AM
Hi everybody,

Yesterday I installed the eBay-like-auction-board called odyBay.
Please let me know how you feel about it. You can read the "New forum options thread" (http://videopac.nl/forum/index.php?topic=542.0 (http://videopac.nl/forum/index.php?topic=542.0)) for more info. There is also an add on odyBay for testing.

The new options to odyBay that can be installed are:

  • Insert and manage Auction, BuyItNow and BuyItNow + BestOffer
  • Show more detailed information on listing, including image and public data on the seller
  • Feedback system with comments
  • New manage features
  • Use ad manage decimal number
  • Send PM to seller when BuyItNow expired and send PM (and email if setting) to seller and buyer when Auction expired.
  • WARNING: this MOD not use cron job for check when listing expired. Cron job are not avalailable in all server. I not assicure that PM arrire to seller and buyer at exatcly time of listing expired
  • Show listing and feedback in profile
  • Send a PM (and email is setting) when user place a bid higher then you
  • View all open listings in a page

However, this is gonna cost me some money and I want to know if it would be worthwhile to invest that. (This is not a plea for donations! Everything will be absolutely free for all members!)

Please give your opinion! Not only by using the poll but also by replying why you do or do not like odyBay.

Thanx,

Janzl

from a buyers point of view:
its nice to have a place with (mainly) videopac auctions, no need to search trough hundreds of thousands of ebay listings ... on the other hand you can strike a bargain on ebay, as some auctions may slip through the eyes of the other bidders ... (not from sellers of this board of course)

from a sellers point of view:
I prefer ebay for the reason that makes it as successfull as it is: there can be only one ... as an auction seller it makes sense to sell your item where you get the highest price and that is of course the place where most of the people look ... as a buyer you buy where you have the most choices ...
some free auction sites only make sense for people listing the same stuff over and over again in the hopes to get some high prices or selling huge numbers of the same item ... so basically fixed price selling without paying fees ... and we already have a forum for that here

for the anonymous bidding: if you want to get something like odybay to work on this site, there can not be such a thing as ebay elite, as we would have one bid on each of the auctions ... I don't know how high the percentage of members of the site is which are also in ebay elite, but I guess its pretty high ...

(OT: as you may or may not know, I am not a member of ebay elite ... for a simple reason: I am not looking a lot of stuff, so I am prepared to pay more for the few things I don't have than most of the other people on the board ... so if something REALLY rare comes up, and someone else is willing to pay lets say 50 USD but spots it first, while I would pay 300, and the price is 30 USD 6 seconds before the end (that is before the sniping takes place) and the item is sold for 51 USD for someone outside of the board ... well, will not happen to me ...)

just my 5 cents ...

Yes there can, I would just say that the item is exempt from ebay elite, I would list anonymously regardless (as Nico did with all his stuff recently) because of the small community. Anything I list would have been offered to ebay elite first anyway, as I probably got it cheaper due to ebay elites existance.

Except it doesn't work like that because where someone else expresses an interest then max bids are discussed. The 6 second scenario although in theory could happen, it doesn't. Being part of ebay elite means that you agree to wait for the next one to come up anyway. I have had to wait for the next one on a couple of items, but they come up eventually. I've passed by many more items by sellers who wont ship international (that boxed G7200 went for only 15 euros 2nd time round!).

I know some people decided to drop out of ebay elite with the forum switch, and I understand the reasons in that you can then bid whatever price you want on whatever item you want, and thats fair enough.

on the other hand you can strike a bargain on ebay, as some auctions may slip through the eyes of the other bidders

And there is the bonus of being in ebay elite, tips are given that probably didn't get seen by everyone. I feel I've gained more than I've losted, IMHO.

lets face it: Nicos items would have never fetched so ridiculous prices without ebay elite - anonymous listing only works if you have other people you know and don't bid on items they bid on, but if you list it in a forum and decide who is allowed to bid, then anonymous bids are of no use ...

well ... actually the 6 second scenario works quite well ... for me ... I only use esnipe to bid on ebay (for various different reasons) and I got quite some bargains thanks to ebay elite ...
still I try to not get in the way of you guys and only bid on stuff I really want, not to resell (like the boxed G7200 for example ... someone could have made quite some money from that ...)

I know some people decided to drop out of ebay elite with the forum switch, and I understand the reasons in that you can then bid whatever price you want on whatever item you want, and thats fair enough.

actually I haven't been part on the other forum either (for the same reasons)

true - I am member on other boards where this works quite well, too (and even without an ebay elite)

sorry, I never really liked the whole ebay elite idea, but if you like it, that's just as fine with me ! (back to topic:) I just wanted to state reasons what I think about the odyBay, and I think it could be quite funny (I can even see me putting up some auctions), but not for serious buying/selling, so I am not really sure, if it justifies the additional expenses for Janzl ?

Ebay elite just stops a small band that would otherwise bid against each other. I was a member when I paid 300 euros for a 61. It only takes one other bidder outside of ebay elite for prices to go up, and Nico listed in what I believe is the strongest videopac market, France. All of Nicos items had multiple bids, they went for what people were prepared to pay.

Actually I didn't mean that at you, I know others dropped out.

Agreed, as I've said I'm not in it to make a profit, so hopefully give it a go soon  :)
