Title: Is Janzl on holiday?
Post by: grgh on May 20, 2008, 04:59:08 PM
He hasn't posted since 2nd May although the stats show he was online today.

I got an email from someone a few days ago waiting for their registration to be acknowledged, but it doesn't seem to have gone through yet as they haven't appeared as a new user.

2 or 3 days ago the site was down for a few hours. But since it was like 12 p.m. in the Netherlands i thought that maybe the provider was doing an update to they're server. I've had a website also, and from time to time i got mails from my provider saying they're doing update to they're systems at nighttime. So maybe it could be this.
Maybe he's on holiday, don't know.

Yes I think that was Sunday night around midnight, I assumed it was a site update as well. What a sad bunch we are  :)

On a holiday??? I wish!!!   :'(

Nope just very very busy and most of the time I just really haven't anything interesting to say haha

He hasn't posted since 2nd May

Has it been that long..? whoops...  :-[

I got an email from someone a few days ago waiting for their registration to be acknowledged, but it doesn't seem to have gone through yet as they haven't appeared as a new user.

I have had one new memberrequest on the 16th for somebody named kiki77. I have send them an activiation email but they haven't activated yet... If this is the member you mentioned George then let me know and I will activate his/hers account myself. The whole activation-thingy is meant to protect us from spammers. 99% succes this far.  8)

Hmm, I remember a few days ago this site was down for hours.

This happens every once and a while, I don't know why. Sometimes the site is offline for a couple of minutes but it always restores itself.

Maybe he's on holiday, don't know.

Nope  :( but even if I was, I can always manage the site as long as I have internet access. Even restoring the latest backup can be done from anywhere in the world so no worries. The site is NOT going to dissappear! Also the company hosting the site is from a friend of mine which leaves me with more options then the regular hosts.

So... everybody can go back to sleep safely, I am just very busy and this has left me with little energy to answer posts the last couple of weeks. But I'm still here!  :o

What a sad bunch we are  :)

Self knowledge is the first step to greatness George  ;)

So, no greeting cards from Janzl, just from sunny Nijmegen, where he has been on holiday for a couple of years now...  ;)

That is awesome!  Thank you Janzl. I feel this board is very secure and I know I am here to stay.  So is it very expensive to have them host this site?  I have always wondered.  It is cool that you can manage and restore this board if need be from anywhere.  It is invincible!

Nope, I made a little video production for his company to show on business fairs and in exchange I could choose a domain. So I chose videopac.nl  8). Therefore its costing me nothing  ;D and that makes a dutchman very happy!

Wow thats awesome!  Sounds like quite a nice exchange.  What program do you use to edit video?

For editing I use Adobe Premiere, for the effects I use Adobe After Effects. And of of course the usual Photoshop and illustrator thingies. Adobe audition is used for lots of audio.

Nice!  I also use Adobe Premiere.  Another hobby of mine is messing around with 3d Studio MAX and I enjoy using Corel Painter for digital art.  A friend of mine makes short films so I help him out with simple Visuals Effects from time to time.

That's great! I know how much fun it is tinkering away with these kind of softwares. I have done some assignments with 3dsMax but I prefer working with AnimationMaster because its very specialized for character animation and it uses splines instead of polygons.

Also if you do SFX for your friend I should really get into After Effects if I were you. It is Photoshop for video  :) Lots of nice filters available for it with some of them even usefull  ;)

I need to learn how to animate rather complex something for an upcoming film so I should take a look into AnimationMaster.  I havn't experimented with many "organic" like animations in 3ds MAX.

I have heard some great things about After Effects. I always rotoscope more simple animations (lightsaber glow lol) and that takes a lot of time. I think I will test it out, thanks for the advice!

For more info about AnimationMaster : http://www.hash.com (http://www.hash.com)

What exactly is it you're gonna have to animate?

I really wish I could afford Lightwave, as it is still my favorite 3D program, and the one I first gained any kind of meaningful experience with.  I have 3DSmax, and even after going through some of the tutorials, it's just forbiddingly user-un-friendly to me.  Produces amazing results though.

It takes a lot of time and practice to get used to 3ds MAX.  I only work with it as a hobby so thankfully I don't to have to know everything about it.  It is in some ways limitless.  I have been working with it for a few years and what I can do on it is only I would say around beginner level, but I am comfortable there and I learn what I need to know.

Thanks for the information.  For an upcoming film, I need to animate a number of tentacle like appendages on a head of a human.  The tentacles are supposed to look similar to vines and they "walk" the head.  I will have to look at a number of 3ds MAX tutorials to get a start on this, lol.

Wow... that's gonna be a hell of a job. Modelling a head in 3dsmax is no picnic. Make sure to check on AM because that piece of software is much more aimed at organic modelling. But also in AM its gonna be a hard undertaking to model and animate the squid-head. Try to use as less tentacles as possible because animating say eight tentacles will be a hazzard. I saw a nice documentary on Ray Harryhausen. He is the guy who did the monsters for Jason and the Argonauths and other classic's and he said the eight-headed Hydra was the hardest job he has ever done. He also animated the famous scene of some greek soldiers sword-fighting animated skeletons and that was more easaly to accomplish according to him.

So.. take it slowly and plan your animations very carefull. And I hope that your deadline is not to tight which I guess it is not as it is a hobby project  8)

Do you have some of your work online?

Thanks for the advice.  I have a lot of time because my friend hasn't even started shooting the movie yet! He plans on starting it during this summer.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=umtbolPnf8I  Here is a link to a 3d model of a flashdrive I made a long time ago.  (I should post more recent videos)

http://youtube.com/watch?v=_2fyD7ccPWM  The intro of this school psychology project was made in 3ds MAX by me a few months back.  With youtube quality is it hard to see the textures.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=QXjqU-gzjBI  The intro clips and the CGI in this trailer was made by me, my friend should "release" this soon. lol

http://youtube.com/watch?v=V4Bye-fmu58  This is part 1 of VINES, a movie my friend recently made.  Some of the CGI i made is in it, mainly stills with effects applied to it.  You can see some animations I made in the beginning intros.  It's not exactly a masterpiece, but we like to have fun this way. :-)

Do you play in any of these movies? The last movie is staring Alex Sweers. Is that you?

Yup thats me :-)  In the VINES film I am the one wearing the yellow polo shirt, later in the movie I just have a white under shirt on.  Please excuse my poor acting! (one of the reasons I prefer just to do CGI) lol

A few of my pitiful attempts at 3DS animation (using other people's models I might add):

A bit of Trekkie stuff (http://www.thelogbook.com/earl/earls-videos/enterprise-animation/) - this one's actually not bad.  Just slow.
More Trekkie stuff (http://www.thelogbook.com/earl/earls-videos/sequential-animation-frame-import-test/) - this one's embarrassing because I didn't realize that I accidentally moved the lights along with the "camera", so it gets ridiculously dark right at the end.

Animation on stuff other than 3Ds:

Football promo (http://www.thelogbook.com/work/high-school-football-frenzy-open-2006/) - complete with tutorial!
Actually, you'd be better off just browsing through this whole section (http://www.thelogbook.com/work/) - there are tons of examples of 3D, match-moving, compositing, etc. from my old TV job.

Thats looks awesome!  How did you achieve the glow effect around the planet?

Partly the model came that way (with an atmosphere modeled onto it), partly from some post-production effects I applied in my editing suite.

Thats neat, I remember on your website you said you got that suite for a sweet deal!
