The excitement of a game. The mind of a computer.

« on: June 03, 2009, 08:47:56 PM »

The June 2009 Game of the Month is Parker Brothers "SUPER COBRA".

A few bits of information:
It was never released in North America but the Brazillian version does work on Odyssey2's.  The European version will not work on O2's.  It is the only(?) mass produced side scrolling games for the videopac/odyssey2.  The "side scrolling" is crude but it does set the game apart from other titles.

Hint:
The key to being good at the game is memorizing the obstacles so you can prepare for the screen shift.  It does take a lot of time to get good at the game and it can be frustrating but I like the challenge.

Load up your Cobra and fire away!

Are you sure the european version doesn't work on Odyssey2 consoles?

I haven't tried it so I can't be 100% sure.  I had heard that only the brazillian version of the Parker games worked on Odyssey2's.  I'll try to find my original source and post it here.

After searching the web and scratching various body parts trying to jog my memory I have come to the conclusion that it was a guy selling games at the MidWest Gaming Classic that told me the info.  He was selling Parker Bros. games for he O2 and told me they wouldn't work because they were made for the videopac but he did have a Brazillian version that would work (I think it was Frogger).  I wasn't able to confirm it online, though I am sure someone out there knows for sure.

I know it is true for Frogger, but not for the other Parker games.

Super Cobra works fine on the Odyssey2. So does Popeye too.

Q*bert and Frogger do not (the Euro versions). Odd thing is, supposedly 1 out of 10 Odyssey2 units can play Q*bert!?

As usual I'm posting my score early so I can say I held the high score for 5 minutes  Grin

Just gave this a go, I got a shockingly poor 119 and didn't progress past the first mile! Since there are 13 miles I'm really going to have to do better with this one.

It works fine through The Voice module, and I've left it there so I can have a few more goes when I'm in my 'work shop' through the month.

There are lots of great things about this videopac game, the way the sound of the rota blades slow down and speed up, the sound when you go up and down (reminded me of the 'vario' when I used to go gliding and hit a thermal), a bomb count and more than one life, I didn't even find the scrolling that annoying apart from when I ended up face to face with a wall on the next screen...
 Sad

I'll be giving this a couple more goes this month for sure. Another good choice Rick  Smiley

Thanks for clearing that up about that Parker Brother games.  My memory is fading faster than I care to acknowledge.   Embarrassed

I'll be firing it up tonight to go for the high score.  I've played it on the muti-cart a few times but I'm not very good.  Now I have an excuse to practice.

I couldn't beat your score grgh.  94 was my best last night.  I'm sure I'll post a better score by the end of the month.

the trick is to go as far as the "flying" enemies ... there you can stack up lots and lots of points ...

421 ... just try to stay in the screen with the not-shooting flying enemies for as long as possible ...
