I now can cross that bloody street...

Hi everyone, this is great news!

About two months ago I was contacted by a developer of games for Videopac in the days of 1982/1983. He told me he liked my website and offered me his material from his programming days at Philips. He was going to get rid of them but he wanted his materials to get a good home.

You can, of course, imagine my reaction  Grin.

After a while of emailing back and forth I decided that it would be definately worth a trip to London, where he lived.
The day that I went there proved to be a happy one. We sat down and opened a box filled with eproms, I was in prototype heaven.

The following prototypes of known games are:

- Morse 2x
- RobotCity 4x
- Turtles
- Killer Bees
- Q-Bert 2x
- Terrahawks 2x
- Black Hole (Neutron Star) 3x
- (Play)Tag 2
- SuperCobra 2x
- SpiderMan 2x
- Popeye
- Frogger

These are already very nice to have, but the following is even better:

During testing I discovered 5 games/programs unknown to me:

1: Sound tool

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7JYn6B7rxqw

I didn't know this tool and considered it new. Ren? has told me that he already has it. Because I didn't know that I thought more of you might not know it so I thought I should share this video.
This SoundTool was developed to help videopac programmers to generate their sound routines.

2: Himalaya

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_lvOs6EnA4

How this game works is currently not really clear. The programmer only had some vague recollection of its purpose. He thought that in this game you were supposed to fly to Kathmandu.
I don't know if it is even finished.

3: Bastion

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cFdmgs4r7_E

In this game you have to seige a tower by climbing on a ladder and defend yourself against the "rocks"(?) being thrown at you by the defender of the tower. When you get the chance you can fire an arrow at the defending soldier.
After you have reached the top you have won this level and it starts all over again.
The game is kind of playable, I am not sure if it is finished.

4: Catburglar

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DDsWDFxy0oE

In this game you are a Catburglar trying to escape from the police by climbing a large building. On top of the building a helicopter will pick you up and you have escaped.
During your climb you have to avoid plants which are thrown to you by the buildings residents. Also windows turning white will make you fall down.
When you fall you will drop a certain distance. If you haven't climbed high enough you will crash on the ground ending up in a nice puddle of blood.
This is my favourite of all the new games and I actually think it has the very first bloodsprite made for the Videopac. This last feature must make GRGH very happy as he has been requesting this for quite some time now.

5: Terrahawks

YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXk7OSA6NGg

This game has a very nice intro. After the intro you have to battle a giant spaceship with you own spaceship. Unfortunately your own spaceship is almost completely uncontrollable. I have managed to shoot certain parts off the spacehip but for the rest I am not aware of what I should do here. I don't think this game is finished.

This game is a bit of a mystery as Philips already released a game called Terrahawks.
My guess is that Philips made some kind of lisence deal with the authors of Terrahaks to make a game of the series. Maybe the game they developed came out bad (as in this prototype) and to spare time and costs they released the by Magnavox released game "Attack of the Timelord" under the name of "Terrahawks" in Europe.
This is a guess by me, not a confirmed fact.

Well that should make us happy again for a while I guess.
Of course there is more to be told but I will do that later on. Of all the info I got, and still will get, I will make a project in the future where all will be revealed.

Cheers everyone!

Wow. Congrats Janzl. It?s just amazing. Catburglar is a nice Crazy CLimber clone and really seems the funniest game. About Terrahawks, do you remeber a catalog posted here about Terrahawks 2 (or was it Attack of Timelord 2)? Thanks by posted that really nice videos.

Miracles still happens. Great finds. Catburglar really looks great. Is Bastion a 2 player game? It looks like you have to keep the white line on the A line in between the red section, to progress. Intro in terrahawks really looks great.

So, the big question(s).... when do these things get tested for completion, and if done enough, released by whomever???!!!  Cool

I'd buy the sound test and Catburglar right now, if they were available!

Thanks for all the nice replies Smiley

GRGH, I had no clue you lived in the neighbourhood. And in all my enthousiasm i totally didn't think of it hahaha.

Catburglar is indeed a crazy Climber clone, Rafael. I didn't know the game but I looked it up. It looks better then the atari version though Evil.

Bastion is a one player game. As far as I could figure out.

Indeed the big question is, what's going to happen next.

First, Ren? is going to check out all the eprom's. There is still one mystery eproms that doesn't work. It has A4800 written on it. Ren? is gonna check all the roms for error's and  see if he can get the A4800 rom to work.

I am planning on releasing Catburglar myself. I just always wanted to do my own release. So that will be the first one.  Smiley
