well - my guess is that it can only work with the values the BASIC calculates and wouldn't access any other hardware registers

its probably something simple like "add one for every basic command executed" ;-)

it also shouldn't be too difficult to find out the location it is stored at ... write a program that only calculates random numbers and dump the memory after each loop - then compare the memory dumps and look for the values that changed ;-)
