So I got the 2600 game "Garfield" http://atariage.com/software_page.html?SoftwareLabelID=838 in the mail a few days ago. I thought to myself, "this is a fairly simple game, I wonder if I can release a finished version for the Odyssey 2." After about 6 hours, I came up with this. I want to call it Alley Cat, but there's apparently a computer game already called that, so I may have to think of a different name. Not very much at this point. All you do is guide a cat left and right along a fence. I just wanted to see if I could do something like this and share the results, I'll come back to this once GoSub 2 is completed.

Afaik there are two computer games called Alley cat: one for DOS and one for the C64. Two totally different games.

If you want some inspirationfor a cat, check The mousing Cat. There´s a nice trick there. Wink

The Mousing Cat was not released in the USA.

So, I was not familiar with this game.

So I looked it up on youtube to see the gameplay.  Is the goal to catch the mouse in a squared off trap?  - and then he eats the mouse once caught!

Coming from the US myself, I have to say I hadn't see that either.  Now, I think I must have it.  If nothing else, just for the cat eating the mouse screen.   Cool

Actually it's the same as for the C64, but I just couldn't resist  Grin

Of course the Atari version is better than the C64 version  Evil

Well, if they had made it for the Atari Touch Me it would have been better! A total crap game on the 64!  Cheesy

We could do that anyway:

Atari XL is stupid! It's called XL but it's smaller then a C64! Ha!

Your turn!

Hmm... no... let's just stay on topic!

Added a potted plant for the cat to dodge. If anyone can make a better sprite for it, let me know. (the stem of the flower is character 0, in case you're wondering.)

Hi Chris

I really like how this is coming along.  Smiley   I think your spite for the potted plant is fine as is.

I actually had a brainstorm / idea for game concepts that you could possibly use:

Have the dog appear at the bottom of the fence at random times... he can try to jump
up and reach and 'catch" the cat. As the player (the cat), you must move left or right to
avoid the dog when he jumps up to try to catch the cat.
If the dog catches the cat, the player loses a life.

Another idea I had was to see if perhaps you can have the objects coming
from the left and right:

burgers - if the cat catches them successfully, points are awarded (say 10 points)

flower pots - must be avoided. if the flower pot hits the cat, he falls off  and the player loses a life  ( you have completed this!)

bananas - if the cat catches a banana, the cat collects them. When needed, the player can
press the action button and "drop" a banana and try to hit the dog (which would cause the dog to slip and go away ( 20 points)

Just some ideas....

I'm experimenting with trying to make the pot go a little faster once the cat clears the first screen. I want it to go faster than what is on screen 1, but not as fast as doubling the speed. I was just wondering if there was a way to increment the speed by, say, half?
