I'm reading in a source and pdf that the sprite xpos is 9 bit and that it requires some extra code.

I did a small test here and have a bouncing dot going over then entire width of the screen without any special code, just this

mov r0,#001h
movx a,@r0
inc a
movx @r0,a

is this something the emulator is not dealing right?

if it does then what is the need for that 9 bit routine?
I take the Videopac and leave the Canoli!

You don't need the 9th bit. It could be used to let the sprites move in smaller steps, but Soeren Gust might be the only one who has used it.
