I now can cross that bloody street...

As some of you might have noticed, last night, the forum suddenly was offline and people visiting received a server error.

Let me give an explanation: what was wrong and what I am going to do about it.

This forum is build with Simple Machine Forum technology. The current version is 1.1.21. This is the last and final update for the v1 edition of this software. SMF has started the V2 edition a while ago and no longer support updates for the v1 edition.

I have postponed updating the forum because, even though V2 is very nice and more modern, we would loose certain functionality we currently enjoy. One big example is the forum's arcade. Up till now it looks like they no longer support it for V2.

Unfortunately, V1 will get deprecated due to the always updating of server software. This must happen because security issues arise for older versions of PHP or SQL for example. So what we saw tonight was the warning that the forum's technique is getting to old and should be updated.

I have fixed this now, rudely, by simply making the forum ignore the error messages that PHP is generating when somebody visits the forum. This will keep things up and running for now, but I have to upgrade the forum in the near future to simply keep it available.

So.. there you have it. Enjoy the games on the arcade as they might and probably will dissappear in the weeks to follow.

Sorry, but that's the way the cookie crumbles.

Thanks for the explanation and for the time that it costs you to maintain this forum.

Thanks René.

The road to the next upgrade is taking up my time already. First I must be sure that the upgrade will be safe so none of the forum content will get lost.
Upgrading will mean that a lot of mods will get lost. When I upgrade to v2 it will be just the basic forum without all the mod's I have installed.

These include:
- Buy me a beer
- Insert Youtube
- The links button in the menu
- Bookmarks
- Arcade
- Shoutbox
- custom smiley's

So you see that lots of functions will be gone at first but my main concern is that none of the data will get lost.
There will be lots of groaning and moaning from some members I am sure, but unfortunately I can no longer deny that the upgrade has to be done.

After the upgrade is done I will start to look for substitutes for the lost mod's.

This is my mod priority list:
(in order of importance)
1 insert Youtube
2 Bookmarks
3 Links button in the menu
4 Custom Smiley's
5 Shoutbox
6 Arcade is probably not going to return, as there is no plugin for V2 (Yet)
7 Buy me a Beer will not return as I only did receive one beer in nine years Cheesy

At first the forum will be very ugly but I will do my best do make it pretty again. The look is definately going to change as I also want to make the forum responsive (optimised for all devices including mobile).

So that is the task ahead. Unfortunately life is very busy for me so I have to find the time to do the upgrade in peace and quiet as it will be a very delicate moment (long live back-ups).
When I know the date and time of the upgrade you will all be informed off course.

It will take some getting used to but I am sure we are all flexible Wink

I can't see who uses bookmarks so I don't know if it's popular. I use it a lot, gives me a quick view of all the topics I find interesting.
