Was not Ed Friedman the programmer  Huh?  (Interview with Odyssey˛ Artist Ron Bradford):

"After completing Quest for the Rings, Conquest of the World and The Great Wall Street Fortune Hunt, Ron and Steve began a fourth game Sherlock Holmes bringing in their own programmer, Ed Friedman, a computer professor from the University of Chicago."

When we couldn`t talk to someone who maked the game, we must do our best.

After so many brainstorming, I prefer Marks list No.2:

symbol 1 = Skull - murder by Poison
symbol 2 = Syringe  - murder by injection (the far left pixel could mean a drop on the end of the needle)
symbol 3 = Stab Wound - murder by sharp object
symbol 4 = Gun - murder by shooting
symbol 5 = TNT = murder by explosion.

This make for me the most sense. For me, Symbol 2 look really more then a Syringe then a Knife, because of the far left Pixel. That was also my first idea when I saw it. And Symbol 3 could really be a Stab wound.

My arguments and questions.

First, we have to think about the group: you have 1,2,3,4 and A. Who does not belong to the group?

Here we have one (that's what we could conclude), that the elements are murder icons, where the word TNT was placed, because the game needed 5 icons and Odyssey only has 4 sprites for that. The game starts by asking the player: Enter Crime

The idea of the mouth is an interesting sight but it is not exactly a crime.

A syringe would really fit the case, but the contents of the syringe would be poison. We already have the poison represented by the skull, which is a universal symbol. We argue here that it is a knife, for the knife, when a crime icon, almost always comes with a drop of blood on its tip. We also suspect that the first crimes that would come to most people's minds would be knife and gunshot. Murders with sharp objects are the most common. It's something that makes the game more believable, we don't want to have something like murder by big toe bite.

Stab wound. It's interesting though, it doesn't fit the group.

Drowning: Quite creative. The question is, if you don't put the figure, would anyone come up with this reasoning? Could a 9-year-old see this? Wouldn't it be easier, for example, a drop of water?

TNT, Gun, Water (drowning), Dagger (curved on end, otherwise it looks like a sword), Poison.

That is how I see the graphics.
