So I thought since someone was making Doodle Jump for the Atari 2600 that I thought I would try to. What looks simple is actually complex, too complex for me, especially with the scrolling, so I decided to make a game SORT OF like Doodle Jump. There's platforms, an always jumping character, but instead of scrolling, the platform you just jumped on disappears, so you're always trying to jump on a platform. I just started on the game, so this is all I have so far. What do you think?

Great idea, I love these kind of games.

A couple of years ago I was thinking of doing one myself but I'm simply lacking time & skills.

Did a mock-up for it though.

Despite my horrible eyeache last night, I worked on the game. I also worked on it a little bit more this morning. Here's what I have so far. I have a playable binary file right now, but there's no score. This should give you a sense of what I want to create.

I did not know the game, so I went to AA to find out more about doodle jump and downloaded the rom. It's a fun and addictive game, so it's a good idea to follow this project, Chris. As usual, the hints: Fun sprites add fun to the game, Janzl has good sprites, maybe you could use them. You could also try a fun springy sound, or something like that ...Go ahead!!!!

It took a while and a few false starts, but I have a semi-working version of Doodle Jump here. The score will be on the right hand side of the screen. This is so the platforms' x positions can be fair to get to without having to go through the whole screen to get to one. What do you think?

Why are you using half of screen?

So after hours upon hours of starting from scratch again, I finally got a version where the pit keeps going downward. Why? Because I can't get it to stop properly. So I guess it will have to be like this.

Got rid of the static at the top of the screen. Just wondering if I should change the color of the jumper so it looks less like KC?

Heres my sugestions:

I like the platforms moving more only when the player jumps. This is important for the player to make a strategic decision and seek the best leap.
Maybe, if you use cut squares (who knows 2 side-by-side) maybe the game will be aesthetically more interesting.
I also find the platforms with different colors cooler. Another cool option would be to make them change color, as the Attack of Timelord invaders, is very 80's.
Could you use the grid for the lateral boundaries
Lastly, this built-ins sounds are commonly annoying ...

I can't make the platforms stop moving downwards.
I've put the grid back in. And I was thinking about making the platforms all one color, but I don't know. It does look a lot better having them be multiple colors.
And if I can find the sound making o2 program someone made, I will work on adding non-built in sounds (It got lost when my computer died a few years ago.)

I don't see how Rafael hates the built-in sounds. I think they give the game a certain low-tech charm. Nevertheless, I tried to put in new sounds. In my opinion it didn't really go in well. I found the Sound Creator tool, so it helped. Version 16 tested and working on a real Odyssey 2.
