Hello everyone and Happy New Year 2014!
I am pleased to announce that in March of 2014 we (the 2600 Connection, along with the excellent programming talents of Rafael) will be releasing WILDLIFE! for the Odyssey
2 / Videopac.
WILDLIFE! features a "jungle adventure" style of gameplay that has never been available in the library
of ODYSSEY
2 / VIDEOPAC videogames. It will surely receive a warm welcome!
Rafael recently programmed HIGH WATER PATROL! and PIGGYBACK PLANET!
The inspiration for WILDLIFE! comes from the famous Atari 2600 games Pitfall (by Activision) and Adventure (by Atari.)
More details and information to come. Stay tuned! For questions, please contact:

P.S. In the meantime, please enjoy the screen shot of the game.
Here is a very short video of the game:
This is a "teaser" -- only 23 seconds long.
Jump over the fire, jump over the pond on screen 2, jump over the wild native on screen 3, and collect the key! More to come.
That is awesome. Pitfall was my favorite Atari game. Looking forward to it.
Nice!
Great!
Screenshot looks great!!
Will this be a 1:1 conversion of Pitfall?
Thanks Tim ! Also to all : HAPPY NEW YEAR !!! The new year can not start better !!!
The game looks fantastic Rafael. I dont liked Pitfall, because I cant buy it for my Videopac ;)
I hope Pitfall... sorry WILDLIFE! is 100 % flickerfree ??? Is there any Plus feature ???
Oh, you have 2600 points on the picture ... (Atari 2600 ???) ;)
... I like this lovely multi-screen game!
I want it ! :)

No Dieter, the part I most like in O2 was the unique games, even when it was based in other existents games like UFO or PAP (despite I really loved to see Burgertime on Ody). So how Tim explains it have some inspiration on Pit and some on Adventure (id I had to convert an Atari title it was my #1 candidate). So on the Jungle you´ll need to get a key form a wils native, after will be needed to swin on the underground waters to find the Holy Grail, there´s to chest one contests a bomb, other the HG.

Yes, Tom. It will have plus features (I posted a screen shot) and it´s flicker free.
♫ So come on feel the wildlife,
♫ We grab the native's key
♫ We get wild, wild, wild...
♫ We get wild, wild, wild...
♫ The Holy Graal we find...
Kudo's to rafael! Screenshot looks great!

Looking forward, will be interesting to see how you combine Pitfall with Adventure!
I, for myself LOVE conversions of good games from other systems to the Videopac, like Pitfall!
My favorite conversion would be H.E.R.O., which I actually started to convert some time ago. I made drawings etc. on paper and started coding, but coding is really in a very very early stage, in fact only a few sprites exist, so I didn't post it in an own thread so far.

Yeah, but nice conversions should be nice too. And to be frankly I like much Hero than Pitfall. So keep on it. I will love to see it. When I started WL, my prior idea, when I founded an old Pitfall design that I was done, was to be something based on the Lost universe, so I started to think to include enemies like Smoke monster, polar bear, others, also I was thinking sometimes player had to down to type numbers. But I don´t know how and when it started to follow another way ???

That'd be cool! 8)
Awesome news!!! Screens look great! Please make the boxart complement the game!
I also wanted to suggest H.E.R.O. as the next candidate but Dieter beat me to it :)
This looks rather good (and sorry that I haven't tested this much - I was offered such, but just haven't found the time to try it much, but did a bit - jumping that flame is not easy - and I keep getting killed by the darn fish). Looking forward to release of game.

My Nicolas Cave project was inspired by hero:
https://videopac.nl/forum/index.php?topic=2073.0
Anyway, my expectations is to create another Ody exclusive (and probably Nick will lost his gun)
The cave and Nicolas looks fantastic. Do you actually work on this game ???
I think its one of many many many of your projects.
Do you have worked in the past at Philips Brazil, because all your games look so professional !
Where do you get your knowledge of programming games for Odyssey and do you have made games for other systems, or are you Odyssey exclusiv ???

Well, about Nick, I just made one more screen, it gave me an idea how the game should be. Keep on Nick is one of my goals for this year, let´s see.
I never worked on Philips, but I loved to be there to help the Odyssey team :)
About programming, I never programmed before. But since I was kid I ever loved the Ody and dreamed to make a game for it. Fortunately, with the internet, was could possible to know all these amazing people, like you with and our friends here and your nice words, Soeren by the great work with tutorial, manopac by keeping O2em and this nice tools and specially René :-*, he was my very patiente teacher. Be sure, I´ll never be a good programmer like these guys, make thinks like AI on Roboto robots!, fine scroll like Down!, but I´m happy I realized my dream. Finally, I just programm for Ody, if I had to chose another system it was Intv, to convert some ody classics for that. ;)
I am glad, that you have the dream to make Odyssey games. One of my dream is to play Videopac games till I am old. You and other make this dream happen. So, I am very grateful, for all your work :)
Philips were also be glad to have people like you in the Videopac/Odyssey team in the eighties. But at that time we could only play there games. Now we play your games.
Odyssey games on Intellivision? Good idea. Then they will have finally good games >:D

I like Intv, it´s my 2nd fav console. I think it had some Ody inspiration on it´s conception. The touch numeric control. They created their own standard opnenig screen (just like our classic Select Game), their own font and ever their own O2man ;)
Wow! I was absent here for too long. This looks very promising! I'm really curious how the final game will be. Count me in when you release it! :)
Just in case you did not hear, Rafael and highscore.com are sponsoring a contest where you could win WILDLIFE! cartridge serial #1
How, you ask? Acheive the highest score on HIGH RIVER PATROL
Also a poster for the WILDLIFE! game will be awarded as well. That will go to the person with the highest score on SEA RESCUE (VOICE EDITION), which is a bonus game that is on the HIGH RIVER PATROL game cartridge
For more info, please go to the web site:

Good luck!
I need your help! As you know, we are planning on releasing WILDLIFE! in March 2014. We would like to do a release of 100 serial-numbered cartridges.
Do you have any duplicates or triples or quadruples of loose Odyssey2 or Videopac cartridges that you do not need?
Do you have extra SPEEDWAY!/SPIN-OUT!/CRYPTO-LOGIC! cartridges just lying around?
Extra BOWLING!/BASKETBALL! just gathering dust? Extra FOOTBALL! and / or BASEBALL! cartridges buried at the bottom of a cardboard box?
Extra ALIEN INVADERS - PLUS! cartridges that have not seen the light of day in years?
If so, I want them!
These cartridges will be used and recycled and made into WILDLIFE! cartridges....
if you can help us out, please let me know
thanks

So if we send you a cartridge, we get Wildlife at a discount? ;)
I am sorry - I cannot offer discounts on WILDLIFE! at this time. I am hoping to keep the price point at the same price ($25 US Dollars) of our previous 2 releases in 2013 and 2012.
Tim
I was kidding. PM me the information. I have at least one cartridge that no longer works and I can't sell. Someone might as well get some use out of it.
PM sent.
thanks

I added a short 23-second video of me playing the game in the first post.
Enjoy!
Tim
Do we have a release date for this? Looking very forward to it.
Rafael wrote in " High Score contest for High Water Patrol and Sea Rescue " :

I also want to play it :)
Looks interesting. I would like to see more video before I commit to buying a copy...
"back in the Wildlife again.." *sing*
(ok that was pretty bad)
Honestly I really suck at playing Pitfall, but I hope I will do better in Wildlife! looking forward to next week :)

Great news !
One of the eproms is mine. The key to the WILDLIFEs world :o (I take a blue one :D )
Which one of them is for cart #1 ;) ;)

I really like to see people knowing the enemies while they´re playing the game. Back in the days I´d liked to read synopsis about Ody games and try to imagine how the things look (usually it was balls and trees ;)).

I know exactly what you mean. I remember to get a Philips Flyer in the eighties with the new G7400 from the german electronic fair. There was a photo of Videopac 39 (Freedom Fighters) with plus graphics. It was a highlight for me. On the back side they told us which games are still avaiable and which will come with new background graphics. I thought, when Freedom Fighters looks so great, how will the others games look? At the bottom of the page was a short clue, with new games will come:
Videopac 47:The Mousing Cat 48:Backgammon 49:Turtles 50:(1984) 51:Terrahawks 52:Killer Bees 53:Nightmare - more will come
I thought about the new games: What could it be? Mousing cat-ok, something with a cat and a mouse, Backgammon- ok I knew the game, Turtles- i also knew this game, Videopac 50-whats that, they don`t know the titel?, Terrahawks- whats that? In germany we knew nothing about that, Killer Bees-sounds great, a game with bees, Nightmare- wow what a name for a Videopac game.
I can`t wait to see the real games and of course play it. But at that time, without internet, it took weeks and months to see the games.
My last game I bought for my G7400 was Videopac 56 Loony Balloon. Again it was only announced, without a picture (with Neutron Star). But the title was so great , that they ordered the game for me at Philips. I knew nothing about the game and can`t wait to get and play it. Sometimes it is great, nothing to know about a game.
Exactly, Tom ;)
My first Ody item was not the console itself, it was a poster like this:
http://www.the-nextlevel.com/odyssey2/inserts/image.php?image=collect/adz/posters/poster_brazil_games84.jpg
Before to get my Ody I used to get my poster many days on week. Looking at beautifull covers a reading the game sinopsys on the verse. Imagining how the QFTR dragons, Monkeyshines monkeys will look. That´s another thing I like on classic consoles. If you read about a modern game where there´s a elephant on a bike you know how it will look. But how should it look on an Odyssey, it´s a mystery, it´s fun :D

Thats also my opinion. As I wrote, I knew nothing about Loony Balloon. An announcement in an catalog and a short article in the Philips Commander Rom club magazin. Without a screenshot but a picture in black and white with a little boy who hold an balloon in one hand and the game in the other hand. Thats all I had. After I order that game I must wait a few weeks. In that time I looked so often to the black and white picture of the game case with the boy. How would they animate the balloon? And how do they make the wind? ( how would I animate wind ;:) )
After I get the game, I was excited. They did it better than I thought. I loved the balloon, the wind ...I like the game till this day.
I always wondered how were the amusements of Looney Ballon playground. In the Odyssey lifetime here, I tried to find all the games, but when Philips stopped producing the Odyssey, I had only managed 34 (later a friend presented me with a Popeye). Looney Ballon was one of the games that I could not find, and in the middle '80s, I could only think that I never will know this (and others) game looks, "Dream is over" :'(. Fortunately, came the internet and games reappeared :D. Looney Ballon is actually one of my favorite games, and for those who like challenges maze 4 is a fascinating puzzle. I really wish I had found this game before.
I was absolutely thrilled about the big poster that I found in the box of my G7000 at Christmas 1982. I spent HOURS just to look at the poster in the following days and trying to imagine how the games would look and play. And it was so hard to decide which game to get next, I wanted so many of them. It was a new world. No technical inventions that came later (PCs, internet, mobile phones, smart phones etc.) left me so excited as the Videopac did back then.
I had the black square Videopac catalogue under my pillow (this is sick and not a joke hahaha)
I kept on scanning all the (fake) screenshots deciding what my next game was gonna be, which was a hard decision as the games where ff-ing expensive in those days.
I gues my parents did all the game-buying back then as was 11 years old and there was no way I could have afford them.
I loved my small and thick Videopac catalog. With G7000/7200/7400 + Videopac 1-53 in it.
With pictures from my G7400 and the games with plus graphics I won at last the battle in the school against my friend with an Atari VCS 2600. With games like Freedom Fighters + PickAxePete + Satellite Attack + Terrahawks and Killer Bees with PLUS graphics + Munchkin and Crazy Chase he can used his flicker machine as a door stopper >:D
But of course this catalog was also the last I saw before I must go to bed and turn off the light. I know every page and I had him till today :D

Same here. The only thing which could have the same effect should be a new Odyssey. When Philips came with CD-I, I was expecting at least some Odyssey classic, but instead KC Munchkin (:)), they came with Pac Man.
very interesting.
Are there scans of the Philips Commander Rom Magazine or at least from the catalogs available somewhere? I would like to see them somehow :)
I sadly came a bit late to the Videopac. We only had a VCS back in the day and I was too young to know all the stuff which was available. I was happy with that what we had. Got to know the Videopac about fifteen years ago when I did some research about the consoles of the early and mid eighties which was, in my opinion, the most interesting time for videogaming consoles.

It is Saturday March 1 and I want to give an update on WILDLIFE! Cartridges are currently being made and Rafael has approved the manual so those are being printed as well. If all goes as planned, I am hoping to release and start accepting orders on Monday, March 17. (That is St. Patrick's Day here in the USA)
Once the game is ready and I have them "in hand" and "ready to go", I will make a post in the NEW RELEASES sub forum. Look for that post on March 17.
I am not accepting reservations at this time. This will be a release of 100 cartridges and box, so I do not expect there to be a shortage. Everyone should be able to purchase and obtain a game.
thanks
Tim D.
Thanks for the update!
Looking forward to trying the game.
Info added to the release schedule
Sweet!! Can`t wait for my #1 cart and poster.. :) :) :)
Thanks
Just want to give an update: As of tonight Tuesday March 11, all 100 cartridges of WILDLIFE! have been made and are assembled in their "new" cartridges.
Next up: Printing of the labels and adhering them to the cartridges.
Also Rafael has approved the manual. I will be printing those this week as well.
I will take more pictures this week as progress is being made.
thank you,
Tim
I'm looking forward to playing one of these on a real console.
Rafael really does some beautiful graphics on the Odyssey. It is going to look great on my 36" CRT.
What kind of shipping costs will be involved to get it to Europe?
Sorry if i ask in advance...

I not sure how it will cost, but ask to Tim on monday, so he´ll tell you the values.
I am happy to report that the price will be the same as our 2 previous releases (GOSUB! and WALLS!)
$25 for the game (includes cartridge with serial number, manual, and plastic storage box)
shipping will be $6 for USA
shipping will be $15 for everywhere else
I will make a post late tonight / early tomorrow morning with all the details. I must now get back to work!
thank you,
Tim
Will you be posting some new video? I am interested in this game, but would like to see more gameplay before I commit to buying.
Yes, I will have more video soon. In fact, the video we are working on is quite lengthy and we must include a spoiler alert message in it because it shows the solution to the game! Stay tuned!

Is there any chance that there will be a Videopac layout?
That is, for me the only reason to collect in the first place because of VP & VP+
Thanks for the reply!
Like our previous release WALLS! in 2013, the game will only be released in the Odyssey2 style.
Unfortunately it will not be released in the Videopac style.
It is a limited release of 100 games. (1 of 100, 2 of 100, 3 of 100, etc.)
thank you!
Tim
Personally, I'm glad that 2600connection is doing one style of release, as the dual style just make it more expensive for us collectors that want to get all we can.
Thanks Tim for sticking to one style. It is appreciated! :)
Too bad for the V(i)P's then ;)
I'm keeping personally to Videopac.
Maybe later!
As long as the cart works with both PAL and NTSC, who really cares what the label looks like? It looks like it might be a good game.

Exactly!!! The game is being released in the U.S., so having it O2 style makes perfect sense to me. I buy O2, VP, whatever. As long as it works on my O2, I'll buy it. Plus as said, this looks like a good game.
It makes sense to me too but it was just a question from someone who does care about that sort of thing, and i'm glad that everybody has it's own taste about his or her collection. ;)
Maybe i will get lucky but that's all from me about this.
Great work by the way!
I guess it depends on what's more important: collecting games or playing games.
For some people playing is more important, for others it's collecting.
There you go Rene!
In both cases one can enjoy a hobby! ;)

Define, I just feel the same about Odyssey brand, in fact it was one of reasons I decided by an Odyssey back in the days. I´m still miss these manuals with a lot of nice ilustrations and 20 pages only to explain you need to press "action" to shot things ahead of you. Anyway, I really sorry, unfortunatelly seems dual releases not satisfies everbody, so that´s it. :-[

:D
They need also 20 pages to explain what you see on TV after you bought the game because of the front cover. ;)
It was always exciting to see how the game will look after we bought it in the store.
Because of that, I don't want to see more videos of Wildlife! Photos are enough like in the eighties. I want to play the game without to see anything before.
Define. I understand you. European loves Videopac, the rest of the world the Odyssey style.
The producer of the game must decide what he wants to do. If the game has plus features Marc release both versions of a game. So you can choose which you want to have. But I ( a silly collector) must buy both versions.
So what is better? Because I also love the Videopac style I prefer both versions.
I just purchased my copy of this game today. I can't wait to get it! :)
@Rafael & Tombeck: One big agree-ing from me over here!
Maybe i am very hard for myself in ONLY collecting the VP series/Parker etc.
I even stopped with Siera because i would never get more i think, let alone complete!
Maybe it is a good thing to turn my head if i see Odyssey's coming in my alley haha
I fully understand every comment here. I'll just keep watching these booklets and cartridges/boxes and wander of in today, still looking at the designs as i was when i was a kid :)
Marc does a great job in putting his work to VP releases, so maybe i will get lucky with Wildlife...maybe patience...maybe ;)
I do developed more and more respect for everyone who now makes any kind of Homebrew!!
Thanks by your words Define. If it not happened this time, probably on the next ;)

:D. I just was remebering my Freedom Fighters manual (it still smells so nice!)
I also started with collecting Videopac games so I wanted to complete it some day. That's also why I prefer the VP versions of new homebrews if they are released in both styles. But I have no problem when only one style exists, because I'm more a gamer than a collector.
But also I agree with Rafaels statement about the 20 pages. That's also my opinion! Games are so shallow these days and I miss the times where you sat with a few friends before your ridiculously small TV playing some simple Shoot 'em Ups which everyone can play immediately before reading any instructions or doing a tutorial or something like that. Were good times. :)

Enough folks. This was done O2 style, and that is it. Why can't gamers accept that. You won't catch me complaining about VP only styles.
This game was programmed in Brazil, where they have O2 styles games. Made in the U.S. were the games are O2 style. SO image that, the thing is done O2 style.
https://videopac.nl/forum/index.php?topic=1946.0 - this was voted on a while ago. Most gamers don't want dual style releases. It cost too much for folks like me who buy it ALL!
And sorry if offend anyone here, but I will keep posting like this, as the dual thing is silly. As owner of Packrat, I can honestly say, Packrat will never release a game in dual styles. One only, and that is it. Easier to do, better for those that want to collect it all too.
If you only buy VP style hombrews, you are missing out on some good games. The same goes if you only bought O2 style games. Just enjoy what we have.
Sorry, my posting wasn't meant to offend somebody. I only wanted to state why I prefer a Videopac release of a game. I also buy O2 releases, because I am happy overall if a new game is released :)
No offense taken. I do get emotional at times though (and admit it too). I'm not the prior Packrat owner, but rather a totally new entity (mostly good, but sometimes my dark side shows - we all have one).
As for preferences in game styles, I can understand how one may prefer one style over another. The thing is though, this should be up to the person who made the game, IMHO. Not the publisher, but the programmer. If it wasn't for all of the O2/VP programmers out there, we'd have no games at all, and for that I thank them!
As for Packrat itself, we honor what the programmer wants (bar-none), regarding the style of release (and truth be told, some upcoming games will be a bit different from what has been done — but won't stray too far).
My main gripe, and not picking on anyone in particular, is the dual releases. I know there is a demand for both, but folks here don't really like both as a whole - they like one or the other. Exception are me, who'll buy anything O2/VP related (as has been proven).

I'll fix that for you Ozyr

;D ;D
Thank you, ozyr, for your comments. I agree with you 100%.
WILDLIFE! is the first game in which we have worked with Rafael, and I
tried hard to honor all of his wishes with the concept of the game release.
I am from USA (North America) and Rafael is from Brazil (South America)...
So being that we were both from the Americas, I thought it would only be fitting
to release it in the Odyssey2 style.
We did the dual style label release with GOSUB! (but it was the same game cartridge) and
it was just too much additional work trying to manage two label styles.
First of all: I like and buy every game for my collection. I prefer the Videopacstyle, but O2 is also ok. So for me its equal if this game is in O2 style. I would never miss this game from Rafael, because its only in O2 style.
But I have another question and I hope here is somebody, who can answer it:
Our Videopac/Odyssey2 problem is a problem with the old European / American releases from the past.
Have other sytems like Intellivision, CBS Coleco or Atari the same problem? Where there in the eighties also differences between European and American releases? And how does the new releases look? Have they also 2 different looks for one game? And have they also games on one cartridge that runs on PAL and NTSC consoles?

If folks really wanted to, we could always come up with a new standard for any type of release!
As for the other systems, I have not collected anything from overseas for those, so I cannot answer that. Maybe someone else can, as I'd be interested too.
I found a page for Coleco homebrews (Collectorvision.com). It should be, that some games has different styles. One in Coleco style and one in CBS style. At the CBS game you can read: This game should be also available in CBS format.
So I think that our Coleco friends has also different games. I found one game at Atariage.com (Moonpatrol) that would be released in 3 ! different styles (Coleco, CBS and in Atarisoft design).
But again for our Videopac/O2 producers: Release the style you want. The most of us is happy with all what you want to do. Videopac or O2 is equal. The game is the main thing. Thats my opinion.
I'm not sure if I already told this story here (I think so). One day, I was a kid, I dreamed that my father had gone to São Paulo, he bought a "O Segredo do Faraó (VP 21 equivalent)" and hid it under the bed. When I woke up the next morning, I was not sure if I was dreaming or not, I was looking under the bed, but only had shoes :'(. At that time I had no idea that this was one of the rarest games Odyssey. Ironically, years later, this would be the most expensive game of my collection, probably many people would call me crazy, but when I opened that order, I was extremely happy :D. I just think that's how it should be, if what you're buying will make you happy, go ahead. Chris likes bacon, others do not. Each person has their own goals, values, this is very good, otherwise this community would not exist because everyone would have bought an Atari ...
I like the O2 covers/labels a lot more than the VP from an artistic standpoint, and it might be because that's what I grew up with, but I also find the O2 artwork to be more stunning and visually appealing. I also like the VP style and to have something different than all of my O2 carts is nice.

Gads (IMHO). I don't mind variety, but for hardcore collectors, that would really drive me nuts (3 styles that is). Oh well, we go on, and as said — more O2/VP games is a good thing, period (we can agree on that). :)
I notice that no one is arguing in favour of the Turtles/Killer Bees text-based labels...
;:)
Okay, I've got my game and have been able to get the HG and bring it back to the surface. But I'm struggling with what to do from there? Do I go back and jump back over the fire to my starting point or jump over the native and do something over there? How does the game end? Or is that only the beginning?
Anyone?
I also got it today, but haven't got the time to try it. Hope to get that done tomorrow.
But I wanted to say thanks to Rafael and Tim for the game :)
After get the HG you just need to back the jungle and pass the native again. Remember, if you lost the HG on "The Aquarium" you´ll need to recover it.

That's what I was missing. Thanks. I've been all the way to the fire again, but got caught jumping. Didn't try the native side. I'll try it again tomorrow. Also got caught a few times by the things as I'm climbing out of the water/aquarium.
Not and easy game. But not too difficult either. I'm really enjoying it so far. Kudos to all.
During Easter I finally had time to play WILDLIFE. And it's awesome ;) as it belongs to the category of jump 'n run (and dive) games which were always my favorites.
It reminds me of the gambling halls in the 80s where I spent many hours and most of my pocket money for such games.
Most I loved Donkey Kong where I jumped thousands of times over the barrels and destroyed the flames. It would be the greatest thing for me to get the opportunity to play Donkey Kong once on the VP ;:)
The one not jump 'n run game I loved most was Gyruss. Maybe someone remembers. Also this game as a homebrew would be the bomb.
Gyruss was great too!
Played it on a c64 a long time ago :)
Donkey kong i had on a dual screen Game&watch from Nintendo...levels became so fast but i did beat it one time!!
Later in life i threw it away because i opened it and destroyed it...shame on the younger me!! :(
Now they are worth 100-150 euro with box. (but i only collect VP/+)
Could I pay for a digital rom of this game?
