Hi VB

Can you reserve me a copy of the Odyssey2 version and a copy of the Videopac+ version please.
Lowest available number on both please (same number on both lists would be great)

You´re prof. Dam Yzark and you´re on Dark Dungeon looking for treasures. How the name explains it´s dark, it´s also contains traps so prof. Dam needs to move carefully. Everthing he got a collection of maps, a matchbox and great courage. By now enjoy the open screen.

Like in the eighties. Only a name, a picture and some little infos. Now I can dream how the game will look and by the way: the opening screen is amazing.  8) (I have the feeling, you grow with every game  ;))

One thing that puzzles me. Why did Rafael put 'Odyssey2' on the title screen, when the system he uses is an 'Odyssey'!?  ;)

Well, Odyssey2 is the origin of it all...(frankly I had a remaining sprite for use ;))

DD is a very old project. And first I like to thanks René, without him this project (and all others) wouldn´t be possible. The idea behind DD came from another VP game (you won´t guess) and a really Dark period (2009-2012) that  me (my job friends and many people around) had to overcome. It was a endlless and dark dungeon we had to survive for getting the "treasures" ...

So, a new offer from me: ALL your games are looking good.   ;)

PS: I hope that your dark period has definately an end and will never come back to you and your friends !!!

Covers look interesting. maybe gameplay will be something like raiders of the lost ark on the Atari?
But personally I think that the background of the cover from the Videopac+ Version would look better with a black background like the O2 version.

Personally I love black bg. Anyway I tried to escape this time because all Videopacis@alive releases had black bg. Some models are devoloped for this ocasion and people involved in the project (René, Marc and me) voted for this one.Despite Marc wanted to release all five :D
No, it´s not related to "raiders" I think DD is another Ody/Vpac exclusive. I think Raiders Of the Lost Ark is one of few VCS games that I don´t know wha to do ???

 :D

So, Ozyr could make a random release with all 30 different Shooting Gallery covers. With every order a new one.  I need months to collect all and I would have many doubles! That’s a real nightmare!  :o

This is the reason i stopped collecting VPB releases all together. I'd like to support some of rafael's games, but it is just impossible to keep up with all the cover variations and second runs of games you thought were limited :( Too bad, because i am a completionist (i own everything else released for the system)

I appreciate what Marc does for our community, but personally i think it would be better for all to release just 1 cover, 1 version, no second runs. Otherwise i think more completionist people will eventually give up.

totally agree with Martijn - and might I add - no "limited editions" with 20 pieces or even less ... leads to exactly the same as too many editions of the same game ... if you can't get everything because people create artificial rarity, then what's the point in even trying ...

I think it is funny coming from a guy that did the exact same thing with Mage 2 >:D >:D

I know how completists can be but we are talking about the same cover, same game , different design
you can only buy one;)
it is possible....lol

The two different versions of Mage 2 were two different games. And the limited collectors edition was really limited.

And yes, I have given up long ago. It was starting to feel as a waste of many also because some games were not even really worth a release imho.

maybe I am missing something but the problem for this machine is it not
that since day one
there were 2 "designs"?
Videopac and Odyssey²?

VP completists want the european design and O² the US....
no?

Title: Re: DARK DUNGEON
Post by: lucifershalo on May 06, 2014, 11:52:35 AM
same physical cart, 2 different labels....
now, that is a good idea

ps I am probably out of this way of thinking as I am collecting many classic systems
my worry is not which labels or all of them but which games I can afford ;)

I think it is funny coming from a guy that did the exact same thing with Mage 2 >:D >:D

While not the exact same thing, i tend to agree with your here regarding the regular mage2. The fact i opted for 1 cover for both US and european versions on all my releases to date supports my personal feelings about the issue outlined above. In that context, you are absolutely right, the dual release for mage2 is an exception here. While they are indeed 2 different games, you can read in my making of mage 2 article that for many many months i struggled to get both variations into one release, but didn't have the rompace for it. Even though the whole concept for the game is to have these parallel worlds/versions, unfortuanately i couldn't do it in one game so in the end i settled with this dual release which i think worked out nicely. I get good feedback from gameplayers where one person prefers the light version and the other the dark version.

On the flipside, i fully stand by the collectors editions for the Mage series. I think people know i only do them for the 3 mage games where i think it can add something to the series as a whole. Since these Collector Editions usually take much more work to physically create, these are limited. (in the same way limited editions of my vectrex stuff are limited, these are just a pain in *ss to produce ;-)

I am very proud of the Mage1 CE which really complements the backstory perfectly and sets the mood for the game and love the fact i was able to use actual real gem-stones for this.
Mage2 CE was a great opportunity to get both games in 1 nice box with some cool extras and again i'm proud how the swag fits the original concept of the game like the flip-side poster and keychain that feature both parallel worlds and i hope i can do the same for the mage3 CE and close off the mage series in a dignified way.

Should i ever do more releases after (i.e. if i come up with a project that allows me to push the hardware in a new way or challenges me creatively or otherwise), be sure these will be the single-box releases, single run release people know of me.

Having said that, i really appreciate the things Marc does for us. I have seen him at Retroevent 2013 last year with his great stand and promotional stuff. You can't deny his passion for our beloved system and we can really use guys like Marc, Ozyr, Rafael, Dieter and others to keep our tiny-bubble alive (and even growing with new people picking up their old O2/videopac the last few years i get the impression).

I can`t believe whats going on here.  :(

I really hope, that my english is too bad, that I understand something wrong. Let´s see, what we have: 1 game from CCC/year, 1 game from Chris/year and from Martijn Down, Mage3 and maybe Exile - after that ? Without Rafael we need no new poll because of the homebrew style.  :'(

Okay, per my promise, most remarks removed from this post. Debate the other issue in the homebrew section please. No need to step on Marc's release post.

Marc,

One question about this release. In the past, many of the O2 / VP releases were the same ROM, just different label and manual.

From what I may understand for this releases, the game is slightly different for O2 vs VP ROM? If that is the case, I would take a copy of each then still, as this is more than just a style release. Just verifying this, as someone told me they are slightly different in the screen layout (NTSC vs PAL)/

Title: Re: DARK DUNGEON

Maybe a small tip for releasing Odyssey2 and Videopac versions of a game:

If romspace is a concern (that is: 8048 rom-space) then maybe a small switch can be added to the cart which selects O2 and VP versions ? In cost of eprom space this would make hardly any difference.

Title: Re: DARK DUNGEON
Post by: Ozyr on May 12, 2014, 01:29:34 PM
And since these are technically two games [the ROMS are not identical] (a bit different for each ROM), PLEASE put me down for both versions again (sorry about that - I will buy two if they are different in some way - that is how I collect games). Thank you!

Title: Re: DARK DUNGEON
Post by: Nognir on May 12, 2014, 05:33:51 PM
what is the difference exactly?
The model of the console in the title screen?

Title: Re: DARK DUNGEON
Post by: Rafael on May 12, 2014, 08:05:47 PM
In the case of Dark Dungeon there were several differences between the PAL and NTSC versions . As already mentioned, the opening song had different time settings , the colors do not match ( as usual ) , the PAL version on an NTSC console, will show scores and cut counters . Moreover , the NTSC version in PAL console, will have counters on maps . I know other developers , such as Rene , for example , could probably fit it into a single ROM , and if I had asked he would have made a great effort to help, but then ( now ) I understand that he also wants to take time to follow through with their projects . So there it is , different programmers , different skills . On the other hand , not disparaging other publishers , I understand that everyone has their real life , but when I say to Marc : let us try a game five minutes later I got videos , photos color photos into black and white, audios , graphs, statistics etc. . So , if a Videopac cover will let you ( and others) happy, this will happen , this also means gratitude. But , and I will be very brief here , the issue has nothing to do with cases , I have noticed for some time , here and there , some anti - campaigns , hate , do not quite understand these feelings . All I know is that if this is not the place to support the Odyssey project , we can only talk about guns and babies .

Yes = would be nice. Since no instructions would be needed, possible somewhat lower cost too (up to you of course). I'm guessing that mostly hardcore collectors would buy it (since it really is just a demo/joke cart - but still interesting to folks like me).

Due the very long delay of the game's release "Dark Dungeon".
We will provide a free copy of the game "Pink Panther" (April's fool 2014) to anyone who has already paid.

Would you consider selling a copy of your Pink Panther separately? :D

Today I recieved my copy from DD. Cartridge in the Jopac - Select game sound and go. But no. There was a wonderful modern sound/song with a title screen. I never thought, that something like this, was possible with our Videopac/Jopac soundchip. But with the cooperation of "TheVoice" it was possible. Fully synchron, great.

And the game was again a Rafael highlight. Light on and run through the flickering maze. Makes a lot of fun. Today I played not much, but in the next days, when I have more time, I will play more.

Marc, thanks for the release. And also thanks to Rafael for this funny game. And a great THANK YOU, that you don`t forget the plus graphics for Videopac+ and Jopac machines. I love your plus graphics.  :-*

When will you ship the remaining ones as you started days ago and people already received them? Still waiting for a package containing (at least) four games...

This song really stressed me >:( It was also the reaso of delay
Naturally I worked in on my brazilian console, but after testing on others consoles we discovered each type of console needed a individual adjust. Fortunatelly, we always can cont with the Dungeon Master René, so he did some kind of magic and it sych in ever type console. Have fun with the game  ;)

Received the package today.

On a sidenote, it would be great to mention in the first postings of your homebrew releases that none of your games comes with a videopac case or any other packaging, so that newbies know about this.
Having bought Wildlife!, all CCC releases and games by RevivalStudios who all come with boxes in some form or another, I was kind of shocked to find all carts loose in the box and have to search for empty boxes now...

Title: Re: DARK DUNGEON
Post by: Janzl on August 22, 2014, 10:46:38 AM
I have never had a boxed release by CCC, Revivalstudios, Packrat or any other for that matter. Unboxed Videopac / Odyssey2 homebrews are quite standard. I know Revival has given the option in to order an additional plastic box but that is an exception.

Title: Re: DARK DUNGEON
Post by: AtariBuff on August 22, 2014, 10:50:40 AM
Well, then I guess I was just lucky. I bought all RevivalStudios games on Cons with cases, Wildlife! came with a case. From Dieter I bought Tutankham, Spider-Man (obviously), and all except the latter like Terrahawks II with cases.

It still isn't much to ask for to note that a release comes caseless, IMHO. I hope you agree, Janzl.

Yes, well maybe you are right. We have come to accept it as normal because it has been done like this for years but for a newbee it may come as a surprise.

I think the problem is that AtariBuff is too used to raiding mine and Dieter's extra videopac boxes that he didn't even notice that all of Dieter's games (except the obvious Parker releases) came without boxes ...   >:D

But to stay on topic, the quality of the releases (I received Hot Love, Dark Dungeon, High Water Patrol/Sea Rescue and Piggyback Planet) is great, the prices are fair and the goodies in form of the cable winder and the Pink Panther cartridge much appreciated.

You have to get thru the maze without knowing were the walls are. You have a flashlight to use only so many times for short period to see walls then goes back to dark. actually really fun!

Dark Dungeon is again a great game from our Rafael. It`s fun to play. A nice idea with the matches. I love also the title screen with TheVoice sounds. I know, this was a lot of work because of the time settings on the different Videopac/O2 consoles, but I hope he will make something like this again.

Because I know no bad game from Rafael, you can buy it Janzl. Fun is garanteed !

This game has the Rafael seal of quality.   ;)

I make a close up picture from the game. Please note, that the picture is from a Jopac with enhanced plus graphics.  ;D
