Title: Can I make homebrew Odyssey 2 games with a Mac?
Post by: Chris! on May 13, 2016, 01:37:50 AM
So my computer died. I think the problem was it had Windows 10 installed on it. I just got it about a month ago, but it has gotten to the point where I gave up on it ever working again. One of my joys is making Odyssey 2 homebrew games, and I'm thinking about getting something that doesn't have Windows 10 on it, which would be a Mac, and make me a first-time Mac owner, so my question is would I be able to make homebrew Odyssey 2 games with a Mac, would the programs work on it?

I think this would be a bad idea. Most of the tools are developed for Windows only. (Like the latest version of O2em.)

The short answer is Yes, as I've only ever used Macs to program by games -- even back to OS 8 and 9 days, but there are considerations.

As Rene mentioned, you really should have a windows machine available to test O2EM. Plus, the popular compilers don't exist either on OSX.

I had to dig around the internet to find a 8048 compatible compiler. I only found the C source code from a student (I believe it was). I had to tweak this code to get it to compile on OSX instead of linux. Then I had to tweak it more because it didn't work the way I needed it.

It still doesn't work exactly as ASM on Windows (includes, definitions, ORGs are different), but it suits me fine.

There are some O2 emulators that work on OSX, but these behave differently than O2EM, so you still need test it on real hardware (a lot) and on windows, as well.

If you do go the Mac route, it would probably be a good idea to get Boot Camp so you can install Windows on it. I've never done this, so I can't tell you how will it works.

Sounds like it would be extremely hard. I guess I'll just keep going the Windows route. I sent my computer to get repaired so hopefully it will stop crashing right in the middle of my progress. I was so angry.

You can install a virtual machine to run windows on your computer.
Search about Virtual Box.

I use Linux and have a Virtual Box running winXP just for my old school projects.
