Cartridge ROM dump

What piece of kit do I need to dump the ROM of a cartridge?

I thought I knew this already, but now I think I'm getting confused with Sorens RAM cart. I've also browsed Renes hardware pics but cant see a bit of kit that looks like it does this, since I'm expecting something with a cartridge slot on one end and a serial connection on the other (although USB would be nice now :)).

I guess some software is needed as well?

easiest solution I know of is buying a EPROM-reader (or even better a combined reader/writer) and soldering an adapter from a cartridge connector to the pins of a EPROM socket, pluging that into the EPROM reader and reading it :-)

(that was my method until my self built EPROM reader stopped working ...)

So one of these devices?
http://shop.ebay.co.uk/i.html?_nkw=eprom+programmer&_sacat=0&_trksid=p3286.m270.l1311&_odkw=eprom+reader&_osacat=0

So I would take something like this?
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/G540-Universal-EPROM-Flash-GAL-Programmer-USB-40-NEW_W0QQitemZ150373814629QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_205?hash=item2302fa5165&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14
and then butcher a G7000 console to get the cartridge port and solder the connections so the G7000 port was the connection rather than the eprom socket shown in the pic? (or rather I would solder the connection into the eprom socket?)

There's a story about an Odyssey2 cart reader here:

... but I don't think it's very easy.

(Sending your carts to me might be easier.  ;D )

...especially since the SCHEMATIC link doesn't work :(

I might have a few French and Brazilian carts you would be interested to dump  ;)

No, this is the cartridge connector. This auction might have a better picture:

To connect it to an Eprom programmer you could use the 28-pin version of this connector:

You'll need a ribbon cable to connect these connectors to each other (and a soldering iron).

or you do what I did and just cut a piece out of a non-working G7000 motherboard :-)

You mean this one? :

I've just made a cartridge reader which doesn't contain a microcontroller, only a few TTL and CMOS IC's, so it should be easy to build.  :)

I've tested it with a Q-Bert cartridge and with my USB-to-serial cable, and it seems to work fine.

Any chance of some pics? I'm still trying to get my head around how much effort is involved.

I haven't drawn the schematic yet, but these are the main parts:

- CD 4060
- 74LS390
- CD 4040
- CD 4067
- 2.4576 MHz crystal
- 5V power supply
- cartridge connector
- 9-pin D-sub connector

Besides these parts, a switch, a transistor and a few resistors and capacitors are needed.

Actually I'd just like to see a photo of the finished device to get an idea of how much effort is involved.

The device isn't finished yet, it's still on an breadboard.
