Recently I am getting swamped with new member requests by web-bots. I used to check the IP's, but now I delete any new submission that even looks like a name being generated by some kind of bot. I simply don't have the time to filter them all.

So...

If you want to become a member please send your request through the contactform on our website: send an e-e-mail info@...  (you can guess the rest of the e-mailaddress which seems pretty obvious to but I won't show for spammer reasons)

Clearly state the username you have in mind to go by on this forum. I will create a new account for you and after logging in you can adjust it to your hearts content.

Sorry for the inconvenience but that's the way the cartridge crumbles.

I'm having the same problem, but it is from two specific sets of web addresses 61.160.*.* and 60.169.*.* but I cant see if your suffering from the same addresses. Maybe adding those to the ban list would help. Neither of them are successfully registering through the picture matching process though. I'm getting constant registration attempts about every 2 to 3 minutes.

I had the same problems with my forum. Turned off new user registrations a few weeks ago. I'll have to look if there are better spam filters.

Back in June last year, Janzl pointed me at this picture matching mod for registrations with SMF:
http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2965

It really has worked a treat for me, and the support from the developer has been first rate.

Seems like this is quite easy to beat, just randomly choose one of the six pictures and it will be right sometimes..

I have installed a math question some months ago (for example what is 7 + 5?) - but it seems that doesn't help either.

Yeah but the bots aren't programmed to even react to this mod...

Yet.. This seems much easier than OCR and such, just try every link on the page in succession.

But what about the system where you need to react to an email sent to the given email-address to confirm registration ? Are the bots responding to these too ?

I haven't tried and I am not going to because I don't know what kind of damage that might cause.

Yes I believe they do, but actually I don't use that either as I manually then check every registration before approving.

I have done the same now. Made a seperate board with an explanation on how to register. Hopefully people will find it.

I just saw a post over on AtariAge.com from a new Odyssey 2 owner.
He tried to register but didn't find this thread.

I have pointed it out to him, so hopefully he will find it....

Janzl

Hmm, maybe I should change things back to the way they were. Chances are people can't find because it's on the bottom of the page.

It would be best if you could change the text that you get when you press "register", now it says: "Sorry, registration is currently disabled."

Janzl

I know, but the forum does not allow me to change that text unfortunately.

-edit- I may have found a solution. Gonna change it soon when I have the time.
