Home-brew release style

What is your opinion on home-brew [not prototype] release styles (label, artwork, manual)?

Prefer traditional style - but just O2 or VP only (not both)
Prefer traditional style - don't mind dual O2 and VP releases
Don't mind a variant style similar to the original O2 or VP games (no dual style release)
Don't mind a variant style similar to the original O2 or VP games (dual style release okay)
New styles are fine - as long as they are not extreme (single style release only)
New styles are fine - as long as they are not extreme (dual style release okay)
Don't care - it is the game that counts

Just doing more probing - for my own curiosity, and to try to make a bit of a point to - or maybe not - we'll see I guess.

Myself, I like one style, and am a bit tired of the dual O2/VP releases being done (especially if they really don't have to be done that way). I figure if the game should be based on where it was programmed. In North or South America, O2 style - if from Europe, then VP style. Or for those daring enough, create your own unique style, and stick with that!

I think people who have taken the time to develop a game have the full right to choose the way the game is released and in which style.

Found prototypes is a whole different thing. I think they should be released as close as possible to the original style of the company that developed them.
Releasing their under you own name/lable is a bit... ehm...

I agree with Janzl.

While I think that prototypes from the 1980s should be released as close as possible to the Videopac or Odyssey2 style, I think that homebrews should be released in their own style, like the Parker and Imagic games back then. Homebrews shouldn't be released in the Videopac numbering scheme.

A very good example of homebrews in a new style are those from Martijn. Looks good in the shelf as soon as there is a series of games.

Your poll doesn't have an option for "prefer releases in both styles", but that is the option I would choose.

Of course it is up to the person who does the release how he wants to do it, but I prefer a single release. Philips has made a mess of it in the past with lots of different versions, please let's try to avoid that in the present.
You can make your own style, but please make a manual that fits in a standard Videopac box.

Yes very important! Please don't use the KTAA manual as a reference  ;)

while someone is at it - can someone please also fix the Robot City release with a proper manual, index-card and cart lable ?
Also some more index-cards for all the homebrews that didn't get any would help my collection looking nice in my cupboard ...

Janzl made a nice +style cover for this game (and posted it here). Great cover! I used it to replace that ugly original (stuck the original behind it) !

Yes I did and it is available for download here: http://videopac.nl/robotcity.zip

Print it at 100% on, say 160gr glossy paper for the booklet and on 200gr not-glossy(?) for the inlay, cut it out, put it in a VP+ box and you have yourself a new RobotCity release :).
Officially approved by the R.C. programmer by the way  ;D

One nice thing this poll has shown so far, at least on the forum. Folks seem to want single format releases, and frankly, I don't blame them. Dual costs too much for collectors, and honesty, it would make it easier for those producing the game (one style is easier, and you have less to deal with selling two styles).

Of course, for those that still may do dual in the future, I would suggest you really thing about it (as to the why, and if it really, truly makes sense).

I also like that people here don't seem to mind the style for the most part. That makes me feel okay, because in the future, I don't always plan to stick to it (depends on things).
