Noisy power supply - wired wrong to hide it?

Hello, Long time, no see. 

First time signing on to the "new" site. Looking smart btw.

I just bought an untested G7000 mainly for the box. The description said, "no idea if it works, not even hooked up to a TV" 

I started by checking fuses and found the plug was wired so badly I suspect this was done to hide the power supply noise. Live to the neutral and then neutral to the earth, completely missing the fuse. 

The transformer (External) is painfully loud. The main block appears to have some brown gunk either side and the top layer seems to be peeling off. Guessing this is making the ticking noise.

But to my question. I briefly googled it last night. Some have suggested that you can swap it out directly for a another line - potentially a 2600 or NES? I will be looking into this more, but thought I'd come to the hub.
  

Any tips (in laymans terms  ) would be greatly welcomed.

So now that I know how a transformer works, and having watched a couple of vids on it, I'm going to glue the layers. Guessing someone has already done this previously which explains the gunk on the side of the block.
As one video said, "whats the worst that can happen"

Hey 

Do you have some pictures of the exterior and interior of the PSU?
Live to neutral to GND makes no sense to me at all... 
Bypassing a fuse is never a good thing. Is it a model 21 with a 160mA fuse?

So the PSU is now silent.

I've tested games 1, 2 and 4 on this console and seems to work fine. One controller is not consistent so will look at that next.
Guess I need to confirm its the controller and not the port first.
Then voltmeter to confirm no breaks in the wires etc.
   not my favourite to do..

Weirdly my multi-cart doesn't work on this console, but is fine on my original G7000.

I misunderstood your original thread. I assumed someone had tinkered with the PSU's wiring but they messed up the power plug...

Having finally got over a terrible time with covid  I got round to testing the controllers.

Basically looks like the plugs are a little loose in the socket. Not massively, just enough that sometimes it looses one channel.

Any thoughts on how to improve this? Thanks.
